i shot the same one two weeks in a row. mysights where off on my bow and shot at the deer quartering away and cut him across the neck . tracked him for three hours and blood ran out . i knew something was up when my arrow only had blood on one blade and fletching. the next week he came back didnt know it was him till a doe came up and started licking his neck. when he turned i could see how it laid his skin open but didnt cut deep. he got back to almost same spot ,same position , this time my sights where right

I shot a buck a few years back and the whole side of him just under the skin was full of fine shot from a shot gun.

2 Years ago one of our members killed a buck that had been shot by another member the year before in the same green field.The first time we blood trailed the deer but lost the trail in a clearcut. We assumed he would die but we never found him. Got trail cam pics of the same buck the next year. I actually saw him and passed on him and put my buddy that had never killed a mountable buck on him. I named the buck Crip, he had a bad limp, but had been seen chasing does. First time my buddy sat on that field, he killed the buck. He was 4 1/2 yrs old and only weighed 120 lbs. The shoulder on the side he was shot previously in leg just below his chest, was completely atrophied.
The wound didn't affect his rack, he was a 9 point with a split g-2 and made a nice mount. They are some tough critters, we found blood and bone fragments the first time he was shot.

Last year I passed on a young eight point with great potential. It runs off and boom guys daughter shoots it but never finds it. Come January I'm pulling in the cabin about dark. Guy calls me and tells be to come help get his buck. I get down there and wouldn't ya know its that eight point. You could see the baller hole in the shoulder (I believe) and the infection.

Back in the late 70's hunting with my dad, I shot and killed a 6 pointer. In his ear was a fresh hole, which to me appeared to be a gun shot wound. Well I hiked out to meet up with my dad and bring back the truck.
I had heard several shots that morning but none that I had connected to my dad. Well, he said he had shot at and missed a buck. Upon seeing my buck he said it looked like the same deer he had missed earlier.
My dad would take a head shot if the deer was close and standing still to avoid, in his words, ruining any meat. Which was the case with this buck, resulting only with a clean hole through the ear. I have a picture of us with the deer, in it my dad has a big smile on his face pointing at the hole in the deer's ear.

My Youngest sons buck was full of birdshot in the hind legs

In 2007 I watched a 130" 10 point several afternoons in bow season. He never came within range on several hunts. Opening week of rifle season he disappeared and I never saw him again that year, nor did I get any pics. I did hear of a neighbor down the road crippling a 10 point during November. I really never made the connection. Fast forward to 2008. I killed a really nice 10 point that appeared at 18 yards under my tree opening week of rifle season, feeding on acorns. I shot him immediately and before I got down I called a friend and told him how big the deer was. He asked if I had looked at the deer's brisket. I climbed down and looked. Sure enough the buck had a healing wound, still full of puss, in the brisket area. The more I got to looking at him I realized it was the 10 from the previous year. He took quite a blow below his heart. He's the second largest buck I have ever killed.

I've killed two.

One was a big spike on one side 3 point. Found a buckshot in the ham on opposite side from spike that was completely healed up (would have been from previous season(s)). I assumed the spike was result of the injury.

Killed a nice 10 point in January that my buddy had shot square in the shoulder with a bow earlier in season.

Any of y'all remember that episode of Bone Collector where T-Bone shoots a huge buck in Mexico (or S. Texas), I mean it appears to be a double-lung center punch, and the deer runs off like it's going to crash. Well, later that morning, something like a mile across that land, Waddell shoots that deer (it came in to his set like nothing was wrong).

Yes. I killed a doe opening day of gun season a few years ago I had shot with my bow high on her back the opening day of bow season.

I do. It was pretty neat and crazy at the same time. And talk about mixed emotions for killing it.

I've never killed a buck that had been wounded but i've killed 3 doe that i can think of. One had a broke lower jaw that was just hanging, couldn't even eat. One was a 3 legged doe, the wound was almost completely healed, back leg. One had a blown off rear leg.

Yes! That was the craziest thing I've seen. That deer should have run 100 yards and tipped over. He smoked (it seemed) that buck.

I killed a nice 8 point back in '01 or '02 that had been shot the week before by a buddy. The deer came out crossing a road and he shot, the deer fell over for a minute or two and then drug himself out of the road. When we looked there were two perfectly spaced, parallel drag marks where he went out of the road and into the cutover. Very little blood. We couldn't figure it out. Fast forward a week or so on a Thursday afternoon and I'm a half mile from where he shot the deer. Right at dark, a nice buck walks out and is hobbling terribly. The deer could barely move in a straight line much less, laterally. As I pull the trigger on my rifle, I flat pull the shot. Deer runs off back into a nasty cutover. We searched all night and came back the next day to no avail. I had a loc-on in that cutover that was 35ft tall that really allowed me to see down in it I decided to hunt it the next morning (Saturday) really just hoping to see buzzards. About 8:00 that morning the dang deer stood up 50 yards from me, where I assume he had been laying since Thursday afternoon, and I finally put him down. It was truly a mercy killing.

My buddy shot him through both front legs at the knee caps (the drag marks in the road) and I punched through the flank area with my shot on that Thursday afternoon. It was not much of a celebratory kill as that deer had suffered badly for a week or more.

Another one I've seen is dad shot a good 9 point in the top of the neck at 15 yards with a 7mag. Deer was killed a couple weeks later rubbing a tree with a big chunk out of his neck but was healing nicely. Killed about 750 yards from where dad shot him 2 weeks prior.

A few

I killed a 5X5 bull elk in Co that had a broadhead and six inches of alum shaft in his face under the skin, shot from the front. He was bugling and following several cow elk, along with several spike bulls.

Friend of mine shot a very large buck one time with his bow, said he knew he hit far forward and heard it "whack" the shoulder. Said he could see the arrow sticking out the side of the deer as it ran off, and he watched it run a long ways without falling. Never found the deer. At a later point in the same season another guy killed that deer with a gun, and the next day brought the shoulder back to show all of us...it had the broadhead and about 3" of aluminum arrow still stuck in the shoulder blade, and it was beginning to grow scar tissue around it.

See it a lot when tracking with my dog. I know a tracker who tracked the same deer 3 different times year before last. They found the deer the third time after it was gut shot. We almost always find gut shot deer. They are easy to recover with the dog.

I shot a beautiful 10 point a couple of years ago. It had a scab on top of its shoulders and the wound went to the spine. The puss ran down the deer's side when it fell and the infection under the skin went all the way the back legs. It smelled foul. We dumped the carcass - I figured it was too risky to eat.

On another trip a friend killed a nice nine point, When we butchered it we found a broad head lodged between the ribs and spine. the wound was completely healed and the broad head was covered in cartilage.

I've killed 3 bucks that were previously shot. Two had buckshot under their skin and one had two .22 rounds under the skin.
