I'm not gonna comment on how your wife handled that. I'm married too, so...
One question: Did they take the old unit with them? If not, I'd get someone to look at it and see if it was, indeed, toast.
If they did, I'd call the owner of the business right after I called my lawyer.
Surely there are enough HVAC people on here that you can get some comp quotes. If there's a large discrepancy in the price between what you get on the estimates and what you paid, then I'd go pay the owner of the business a visit.

well I'll say it. you should have shut that little party down when the field manager got on the phone to talk with you, then you could've got home and assessed the situation. with that said, what's done is done.

This type of thing is one thing I never have to worry about with my wife. She's abnormally frugal and, had she been in that situation two things could've happened. She would've either haggled with him until she had him paying her for him to install a new unit or she'd have told him to piss up a rope. No way in hell she'd have ok'd any work, based on his advice, without my consent.

She had the attitude that it was going to get fixed and replaced and she signed the paperwork even before she called me, dammit man!!
One thing about the situation is that this was her house before we got married, shes stubborn as all heck!! Well, she's got air now but she is sure paying for it!! She financed it. The field manager is the same guy that "diagnosed" that the unit was bad.Once he did his deal, he called the installers out who arrived a few hours later. The crew that arrived and stayed until 11pm took the old unit with them.
The house is appx 1300-1400 sq ft up top with a full unfinished basement on bottom.
The company is Perfect Service out of Leeds/Irondale area.

I am pretty sure that is the crooks that tried to put one over on my wife. Came around with a $39.95 inspection offer and told her we need a $2000 repair. Fortunately she called me and I told her to write them a $39.95 check and get them out of our house. Called Don Whaley( he is THE HVAC man) and he came out and showed me where they had sabotaged the unit and he had seen that before. They even called me up a year later to advise me I was due for my annual inspection and I not so politely told where to put it

Perfect Service tried this on me back 2007. I got a second opinion though and saved thousands. I would NOT recommend Perfect Service, they only want to sell and overcharge. I don't know how they are still in business.

John..Just talked with a buddy of mine that owns a heating/air business here in town.He said that unit installed is usually around $5000- $5500..He said for you to read your contract and see if you have a 3day right to cancel

Just looked back and seen that it was Friday when it was installed so a 3 day right to cancel don't matter even if it's in the contract.

My bad, I was thinking that the new unit was a trane but it's a Heil. The old one was a trane. Are these two brands similar or made by the same factory? One better than the other, etc?
