This type of thing is one thing I never have to worry about with my wife. She's abnormally frugal and, had she been in that situation two things could've happened. She would've either haggled with him until she had him paying her for him to install a new unit or she'd have told him to piss up a rope. No way in hell she'd have ok'd any work, based on his advice, without my consent.
