So Im driving home Friday evening and wife unit calls my cell phone, she says there was smoke coming out the vents of our home ac unit. I tell her to shut the T-stat off and I'm on the way home after I make a detour to Lowes for some other stuff. No worries, she says,... "I already have so and so company out here with their field service manager"and they are going to replace the unit ( Its a Trane gas/pack 2 ton unit that we purchased back in 2003) . I say: WHAAAAT!!!????
Yes, she says, he took me out to the unit and showed me where the blower motor is rubbing causing it to smoke,and when he hook his gauges up it blew oil all out on the unit,etc......
So the field manager gets on the phone with me and goes on to explain how bad and dangerous our unit was, so on and so forth,..and his guys are on the way now with a new unit and they'll have us up and going shortly. Yeah right, I though, although I said some choice words under my breath!!
The wife gets back on the line and says that the guy suggested to her that she get the "deluxe package" . She bites it hook , line and sinker.The deluxe package includes a lifetime reusable washable filter ( WOO HOO!!) , 12 years all parts and labor warranty and a UV bulb filtration sanitize system installed into the air duct .
They installed a Trane /Heil 3 ton unit that has a 14.5 SEER rating. The installers did stay until about 11pm Friday night getting us some ac going and will be coming back Wednesday to replace the duct work that they say is way too small for this 3 ton unit.He stated that the current duct size would work on a 1 ton unit, not a 2 or 3 ton. And they will be cutting us in a new, additional return in the foyer floor since the house only has single a 16x20 return now.
If any of you do HVAC , feel free to pm me, or post it up and let me know what you would have installed this unit for please. Its a easy to get to unit on a concrete pad located on the side of the house.
When the wife told me the quote that he gave her for that "deluxe package" , I almost wrecked my truck, I chit you not !!!!
Appx what do you that do this think the unit would be installed for?

Eeek! My wife would never make that kind of decision without my input. It sounds like they talked a smooth game over to her. My unit is about 15 years old and I know it is probably at the end of its expectation. With that said, American Standard/Trane is rated as one of the top units according to Consumer Reports.

Is it a single unit for your house? I'd expect $6,000 but hope for less. I'm no HVAC expert, though, as you know. Get that wife of yours under control, John!

I just paid $6000 to replace my upstairs unit. Put in a 3 ton Carrier heat pump. 10 year parts and labor warranty but I had to sign up for the yearly maintenance plan to get labor covered. It's a 14 SEER.

1500 per ton. My question is did he blow the oil out from his gauges or was there a refrigerant leak visible.

They put in a Trane/Heil ? Which one was it? They are completely different brands.
I'd say we would probably be at around $6k-$6500 for Trane/American Standard 3 ton gas pack.
Did you need to upsize from a 2 ton to a 3 ton?

I'd have been looking at everything myself before letting anyone show or tell my wife anything.
I simply don't trust service companies to deal with my wife or child.
My son got taken by Town and Country Ford last week. I got a quoted price for $260. They charged him $360. I chewed asses the next day and got a refund of $100.
At the same time, my son's teenage friend had just changed his air filters on a Tuesday, took it to the same place for something on the next day, they told him his filters were dirty and needed replacing.
It's not a coincidence they tried to shake down both my son and his friend. I have no doubts they'd do the same to my wife.
I will not do business with Town and Country Ford any longer.
Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

My brother is building now. For a new install with two units and all metal duct for 2800 sq ft house his first estimate came in around $5300. Rheem units. I thought that was a good price.

I have been called as second opinion before after some of these "field supervisors" said that a new unit was the only fix. One instance the customer was told that their evap was leaking. I looked for a leak couldn't find one. I asked the homeowner to describe how the othe guy's leak detector. He was using a H10 which has a calibration knob. The guy would turn the knob the leak detector would screech and he told the homeowner that there was a leak. I asked the homeowner if he added any refrigerant and he said no. Imagine the look on his face when I told him he had no leak and his unit was had too much refrigerant in it...

It was a trane unit,same brand as what they replaced, single unit. No refrigerant was leaking anywhere as it was blowing 50 something degree air.I could set the T-stat on 76 degrees and it was comfy in the house. Yall dont kill me as I say that it was a damned done deal by her by the time I got home. It was a little north of...ready for this???......$10K !!! I liked to have flipped my lid Friday. It was not a good day that day nor this past weekend at my crib, thats for sure.

I have been married a long time, but if my wife makes a 10k deal on something without talking to me about it there are going to be problems. Personally I would have told them to pack up and leave before they got started.

I have replaced several gas pac units myself and they have all come pre charged. All I did was remove the old unit and hook up to gas and power and turn it on. One did have to have a new fitting to hook to the ductwork so it took a few more minutes. What took them so long?
