I think I might have posted on here awhile back that for some strange reason I'd been wanting to catch a snake. This guy was a gift. He was in my parking spot when I pulled in. I grew up in the country and was taught by parents and grandparents to kill every snake that came along so this was against the grain for me. Wanted to just reach and grab him but he turned back and bowed up on me. Took a step back and he took off. But a toy hoe was nearby. Pinned him and grabbed him. More pics to come. Knew it was non venomous. Pretty sure it's a black King snake.

He was pretty docile and gentle once in hand. Of course I had him behind the ears. My dad freaked out when I walked over to his house. He refused to open the glass screen door.

I'm not of the Holiness faith but I thought of that verse "They shall take up serpents" and had to take this pic. I had my fun, took my photos and took him 150 yards from the house and turned him loose in a wooded area. Folks got onto me for not killing it. I don't plan to ever kill another snake if I can help it. Do need to learn to ID them more.

The snake did have an odor. Daughter said, "Maybe he pissed on you, Dad."

Grey rat snake. My favorite species but I love the red colored sub-species sometimes referred to as the corn snake. Did some research on coiling tendencies on this species in college. Probably the best snake to have around. They emit a foul scent when alarmed or frightened.

Nah...no need to kill them...I just don't like picking them up because they stink so bad and bite like crocodiles!

Funny story with one of those. Many years ago before my wife and I were married she was keeping her cousins (all preteens, boys and girls) one day for some reason. I was in the country and caught one like that. He was very docile and easy to handle. I threw him in the back of my truck and took off to town thinking the young cousins would get a kick out of it. Well, I learned that riding in the back of a truck for 25 miles will anger a snake. I got to my eventual wife's house and got all the kids, and her gathered around and reached in to grab the snake. Before I knew it he nailed me in the fleshy area between the thumb and index finger and held on. My wife about fainted, the kids were screaming like banshees and I was flailing my arm around with a snake attached to it. All this made for an exciting afternoon.

Broke us all from playing with snakes. I don't kill a non-venomous species, but I don't play with them either.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Some years ago I tried to catch a big "chicken snake" that way, and that rascal bit me in that spot between the thumb and index on BOTH hands! laugh I decided not to catch him after that.

I hate snakes and have no clue why catching one of them is exciting to any of you. Even the little green ones will bite. Evil suckers

In the past I've not been one to let 'em get a pass, but I reckon I "might" be getting soft in my older years. But only for the king/rat snake variant. All poisonous snakes die... thumbup
