Fiance's parents just moved into a new house on a lake. I've been told the lake is famous for white perch. I've fished saltwater all my life, and have never targeted anything in freshwater other than bass or bream. Where do I start for white perch?

White Rooster Tail with the black spots where cooler water comes in. Or just ride around and watch for them schooling and throw the Rooster Tail to them. Fun for kids when they are really on!

Alright, I'm confused. What are y'all calling a white perch? I've heard that term in reference to crappie, but the rooster tail advice you were given above is applicable to white bass.

To make sure I wasn't missing something, I went to the white perch Wikipedia page which suggests the white perch is a northern fish found in the Great Lakes region south to the Pee Dee River in South Carolina. If you are talking about an actual white perch, I don't think we have those here. We have white bass here which is a close relative of the fish people call white perch.

I'm not sure. The pics of white perch look very close to a white bass. They're both in the Morone Genus (bass family). I can see how folks would confuse the two. But I'm like you, I usually think crappie when people say perch.

Yelp I have heard a few Alabamians call white bass white perch. Ain't never heard one call a crappie a white perch. To ma a Crappie is a Crappie. A White bass can be a white perch, a white bass, a stripe or a few more names I am guessing. But since SouthBamaSlayer didn't say where this lake was it could be any where.

This lake is in South Mississippi. I honestly have no clue what they're referring to. I was a little confused as well, because actual white perch is a northern fish. I would think they're probably referring to white bass, but I could be way off.

If it is South Mississippi then they are talking about Crappie. For me that means cane pole and a minnow in a tree top. Several threads lately about them.

linky

Agree for that area. White perch, crappie, sac-a-lait. All the same and interchangeable within the same conversation.

Dang Yankees.....white perch is the name of the fish. To call them crappie, one must do so while holding out their pinky finger

Any docks in the lake? This time of year you are going to have to shoot docks or troll crankbaits to get much action

It would be interesting to get a biologist on here some time and let him tell us just how wrong we are with "our" names of fish. At least we know what they are to us.
i.e. Largemouth bass=Sunfish. Not a bass at all.

There are some docks, but I don't have access to a boat. There are two docks on the property, what lure would be best?

Never heard that term before. Are there also black perch?

Get the F out of the BATFE. The F is guaranteed by the US Constitution. Those other letters are not.
