How much chance did they have to work and forage for food if Sherman had left them where he found them. He was using or destroying all the provisions he could and burning their factories (no factories = no work). He sent them to a place where the factories were not burning...some in fact found work in the north. The situation in the north was not good, but it wasn't as bad as where they were in the middle or a war.
Foraging at home is a heck of alot different than foraging in a strange place where you know no one.
