A few weeks ago I fished with a pal who was throwing a jointed Jitterbug.

We both caught fish -- I was tossing a jig -- but it's always fun to catch 'em on topwaters or see someone doing it.

Anyone else throw one?

Also, any tips on removing the stock hooks that usually suck and putting on new ones. I've tried removing the harness and that's a bit of a pain in the rear.

I was thinking about adding split rings with a better hook.

I think split rings are the only way to get new hooks on one. I haven't thrown one in a while. It looks great, but I never caught fish on on. Always had better luck with a buzzbait.

Like william, I use to catch a lot of big bass at night in FL on the big black gitterbugs(not jointed). THe dam things look like a duck swimming in the moon light but is great to see one of those big boys come up and inhale that thing.
My faovorite lure here on Logan Martin is the tiny torpedo, silver with a black or blue back. ONly problem with it is you have to be careful with a big fish to not pull those small hooks out.

Niether a Jitterbug or Torpedo will catch a fish so I wouldn't even bother with them if I was yall. And I didn't catch a bunch of bass last weekend with a Devil's horse.

Man I love that devil horse. I throw it sometimes even when I know they are not hitting top water.
When I first started bait casting I was probaly about 10 and the line was cotton. When you came in from fishin you had to stand the rod and reel in the corner and strip all the line off onto a large coil on the floor to let it dry or the next time you went fishing it would be so rotten it would literaly fall apart. We usually only had 2 baits, a yellow sally with a #4 silver spinner and an uncle josh pork frog, and a yellow bellied paw paw. I think the devil horse probaly evolved from the paw paw, might have been in the 60s.

Might be that way on the pascagoula and its lakes. I bet if you tried a bream colored tiny torpedo and a yellow bellied paw paw(if you can find one)you would see your self catching a lot more fish.

Hey Bobk, you ever fish that slough that goes into Barnes Lake from West River. Man I use to catch some good uns in there.
Biggest bass I ever caught down there was in Barnes Lake, I was 10 and caught him on a blue gill set hook, on a stob, in the middle of the lake. He was about 5 pounds.

I've had the same luck as Willie. Not much looks better than a Jitterbug on top, but I've never caught fish on them.

I ain't tossed a jitterbug in years. Use to catch a few on them down in the canals around St.Pete.

My favorite topwater is a Nip-i-diddee!

There aint much worse of a feeling than setting the hook with one of those 6" jitterbugs in the pitch black dark and figuring out you missed the set. That's a looooooonnnnnnggggggg half a second. I think I'd rather get buzzed by an F16.

I threw one the other day in our neighborhood pond, got snagged and cringed the entire time I was pulling it free with my back turned.

It came by whizzing like a rocket. I just about would have rather had it break off.

I found an old tackle box on the side of the road a few years ago and it had two old wooden devil horses still in good shape. It had some old lures that I had never saw before. And it had three snagless sallys. I have used the heck out of those sallys

Long ago we would throw the big black ones around Alred.. Caught some good fish. That was back before millfoil.. I had a dang owl attack one night.. luckily he didn't get it.. Pretty cool though.

black jitterbug does wonders on the warrior at night......never been to fond of the jitterbug tho..anyone ever tried the sputterbuzz?? cool lookin lil bait

I've done a lot of good with them. Think about it. A buzz bait that floats which means you can stop it or twitch it.
