My father-in-law and his brother went on a chartered Striper boat on Lake Martin.Now they want to go and try it for theirself.They were using big shad like 12 incers.How can they get bait that big.I know they can go below some of the dams around here and throw a cast net but is there anyother way?Can oyu buy them?

12in is farily big, to buy them you have to have a masterbaiter license. If you stop by any bait and tackle store, just tell them you are a masterbaiter looking for some 12inchers and they will hook you up

There might be a bait store or two that has them. I know they carry big shiners from time to time. Shad are too hard to keep alive so bait stores don't mess with them. I knew a Lake Martin guide who would drive to Lay lake the day before a trip just to catch big shad. The big ones are hard to find on Martin.

Thats funny right there, ITCOLDOUTHERE you are not right.  The guide they used went all the way up to Wilson dam.That just seems crazy to me.Did they use cast nets at Lay or were they fishing for them?

The guides at Smith used to drive up to Wilson and catch shad below Wheeler Dam to use at Smith for stripers.
What kind of shad were they using? 12 inches is pretty large. I believe you'd be looking at gizzard shad or skipjacks in that range.
Big Sassy Shad plastics and heavy jigheads might work casting for 'em if the stripers are hitting on top.

You can use live bream for them as well. Just make sure that you do not exceed your daily creel limit in possession.
You can also use live goldfish too!!

I'm not doing the fishing.They were fishing in 80 foot of water on ledges up to 40.Fishing for nothin but big fish.
