sitting in a blind with little or no calling is not turkey hunting, it's turkey shooting no matter how ya color it.

To each their own, I say. You wouldn't know he wasn't a turkey hunter by the pics he sent me last year. The fact that he sat in a blind and did not call didn't change the fact that he killed 4 & got fat on turkey nuggets.

Meanwhile, I employed a crap load of the tactics listed in the OP, ran like a freakin' billy goat all over my hilly-*ss land, calling like an SOB, and killed 1 jake. LOL I guess that makes me a better turkey hunter than him, tho.

I guarantee you -- if I came on here & made a PSA that I had found a spot with HUNDREDS of gobblers & a virtual lock on killing a bird - BUT you had to sit in a blind AND not call, my damn Inbox would get BLOWN UP.

didn't know the number of turkeys one kills in a year defined if you were a turkey hunter. So if I set out several hundred yards of turkey trotlines and killed a school bus load of em I'd be a turkey hunter?????

Not dissing anyones tactics but the true "hunters" I know wouldn't sit in a blind, kill one without calling, bait or sit a chufa patch. There is a difference between a turkey hunter and a turkey killer. I prefer to be a turkey hunter and have passed on turkeys I didn't think were "fair" kills, sneaking up on one in a road accidentally, slipping or sitting a chufa patch, having one run over me running away from an approaching vehicle. You couldn't pay me to turkey hunt if I had to sit in a shooting house and wait for them to walk by. That is what I dislike about deer hunting. Again simply MHO

I agree with this. While I have killed turkeys where I wasn't sure if the bird ("Tom" lol) was responding to a call from an hour ago and walked in on me or I simply ambushed him, I have never hunted from a blind or a shooting house, and never want to. I dislike that about deer hunting that method, too. Would rather stalk hunt, personally.

You killed 'em, didn't you??? I don't think trotlines is a legal means to take a turkey, but if it is & it's legal & you killed 'em, what's the difference?

Again, for the third time, I'm agreeing that blind hunting is not my preferred method, either... But if it allows the hunter to kill a bird, it does not make that hunter less of a turkey killer than anyone else IMO... Different strokes for different folks, man...

Welp, I'd be curious to hear what outdoorobsession (and others) has to say about your opinion, but I'll say this -- I agree with you that this method is not my PREFERRED method, but ... He killed 4 birds last season...

How many birds did you kill last season?

I'd say he called up 3-4 for himself and then about a dozen more for kids and friends...... That's just a guess but I think Gobbler sees double digit turkeys die about every year. Actually as best as I can tell somewhere about 1/3 of the guys that post a good bit on here see double digit turkeys get killed most years, so it really ain't gonna get many of them thinking about changing up their tactics when they hear that your brother spent his season sweltering in a tent in total silence and managed to bushwhack 4 turkeys in the process.
I'm tickled for him if that made him happy but honestly that sounds more like punishment to me. That takes every single thing about turkey hunting that makes it so unique and perfect out of the equation.

See, that's the thing; he didn't do that. He observed & found out the times the birds were at the different spots, and went & sat for maybe a couple hours, max, and killed the birds.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to change their tactics. The OP mentioned tactics, and I'm responding to the OP. This "tactic" was left off.

Again, for the FOURTH time now, I'll say again, blind hunting is not my preferred method to turkey hunt. But if it produces the birds, then what's the difference?

The list was not really "tactics" but simply some things I have noticed about guys I have hunted with that have killed a lot of turkeys. The OP left off this "tactic" because it is NOT one of the things I have noticed that seasoned turkey hunters do. Actually quite the opposite! grin

A friend of mine was just telling me about a guy that saw gobblers every day crossing through a gap in a pasture into another field @ 4pm every day; he killed his limit at this gap. Furthermore, my brother (who happens to be a pretty good, seasoned turkey hunter) killed 4 last year by a) building shooting houses & b) situating them on "known" hot spots. He had all the time in the world last season, and went & sat in those houses & didn't ever even issue a call. Gobblers walked right in front of him, and he killed them.

How many birds did you kill last season?

As I've stated, my brother is a seasoned turkey killer; he's killed 'em straight up, with a lot of the tactics you've described... But I do credit him w/the wisdom of his plan, as it was on predominantly pasture land where maneuvering around on these birds was severely limited; he'd tried years previous... Again, hard to argue with results...

BC posted about putting his wife in a blind this season & had instructed her to sit all day to kill a nice bird... If memory serves me right, she killed that bird... smile Besides turkeys & time, a LOT of birds die by "seasoned" hunters that aren't hard headed & tied to one or 10 "tactics"; they're flexible, and will kill the bird by any means & tactics necessary...

I'm not proud; if dressing up in a yellow bird suit & strutting & clucking & farting around in the middle of a field killed gobblers, I'd be the first one in line at the costume shop to buy that damn bird suit!! wink LOL

A shonuff turkey killer, can pack up his skills and get tossed out on any property with birds and kill consistently.

Somebody that kills some every year by ambushing them, would be screwed without scouting. All they are doing is pulling the trigger.

I don't consider myself a shonuff turkey killer, I guess I'm about average on this forum, but there is a collection of some of the best hunters in the state on here, and very few of the good ones sit in a sweat box and wait on birds.

I guess you've never watched any of outdoorobsession's videos, have you? Yes, he had a tough season this year, but ... best I can recall, he's considered on this forum as a "seasoned killer" & he regularly uses blinds to kill birds.

My point is obviously flying right over the tops of y'all's heads. I'll re-state it again -- my brother used the blinds that he built (didn't purchase 'em from MW), and after scouting the birds, he placed the blinds in the spots where they were coming out, strutting, feeding, etc. He then scouted some more & made notes of what times the birds were coming to the various spots. He then got to his blinds a few hours in advance (or first thing in the AM, on one bird), and busted 'em in the head. The fact that he did not call is irrelevant.

Also, I don't dispute the fact that there are some really good hunters on this forum; awesome turkey killers, for sure. There are also some really good hunters & turkey killers that do not exist on this forum, too.

I think we all see your point.

The question is, what skill does it take to spend a few afternoons watching turkeys and then sit in a blind over their travel route. 0. Will you kill turkeys? Sure. If that's your thing and you feel accomplished knock it out. If I had to hunt turkeys that way I would just quit because that isn't fun to me.

JUG, it's like this; FOR ME, the thrill & excitement of turkey hunting is stepping off into the woods (or a pasture), engaging a bird, having him gobble & respond to my calling, and killing him by out-smarting him. No doubt about it whatsoever. That cranks my tractor big-time! And, that's what I do & that's how I hunt & that's how I killed 2 nice birds this year (thank the Lord above!).

BUT ... if another fella has a different tactic than me, welp, that's his deal... It's not for me, and I don't do it, but if it gets that guy the results & he considers it a great turkey hunt, and he feeds his family w/turkey nuggets that night, well... Maybe his story ain't that great & his ego isn't as stroked as ours, but ... He killed the gobbler & he's got the pics & the fan/beard/spurs off those birds...

Those folks on here that blanked this year would love to be either one of these types of turkey hunters right about now, I would imagine...

Agree 100% with your last statement, 3toe. The skill employed was observation & scouting, which is a hallmark skill in any hunter, for any game.

There's a guy in my club who is a deer hunter who will turkey hunt 3 or 4 times. He drives his side by side all the way to his blind, gets in it, sits there until 800am and hopes a gobbler walks into the plot. He is not a turkey hunter. Turkey hunters pay for their gobblers in mud and blood, sweat and tears. Now if y'all want to deer hunt them, go right ahead but it's not the same.
