I still do some consulting work in Auburn and I cant tell you how many times I have been stopped coming from the lab late at night just to see if they could find someone drinking etc. Common in college towns, IMO, because they know (a) college students won't resist or complain about something like "you were crossing the line" or "your tag light is out" and (b) they can nail college students drinking enough times that the means justify the end. Not condoning drinking and driving, but we've had this "lot of cops think they can do anything and get away with it because they can" discussion before. It sucks no matter what it is, be it ticky-tack stops or speed traps or whatever.
