sorry to hear your son got bit.....my coon dogs sometimes after hunting will fall asleep on back of the truck.I have seen them ,look like they are chasing something in there sleep ,even growling in there sleep,I have put my hands on the back of one of them and it agressively responded, however it didnt get me but my buddies dog had a fight on his hands for about 30 sec....I always make sure my dogs know it is me on approach....I appreciate the pic ....I showed my little boy who is 5 and told him this is what happens if you mess with the dogs when they are tired .

You should have had him quarantined for a couple weeks and then put him down. I hope you took your son to the doctor. Those scratches can be serious and even fatal.

Good thing that doesn't apply to humans. You would have been quarantined and taken care of a long time ago.

Tough call - but, the dog HAD to be put down.

I am especially sorry for your son - I know it is a bad situation for him.

Best dog I've had or ever will own bit me one time. It was my fault and he lived on another 6-7 years after that. I cried like a baby when he died at 12.I Was about your sons age 7-8.

One of my bird dogs would have seizures when he hunted too long because of low sugar. I kept a squeeze bottle of Honey Bear honey in my vest to squeeze in his mouth to prevent it. One day he was having a seizure and I was squirting the honey in his mouth and he snapped at me when he came to. He immediately started trying to lick me and was wagging his tail when he realized who I was.

Your dog bit your son out of self defense. Your son needs to know that if he approaches a sleeping dog to wake him with noise well in advance. It would have happened the same way if it was you. You do not need another dog.

There is never an excuse for a dog to inflict an injury like that. Mistake or not the dog got what he deserved.

We have a very tiny yorkie that will growl and snap if we wake him from a deep sleep. Never bit though.

Even if he did bite he couldn't likely break the skin. That's the one good thing about very small dogs.

I love my dogs like I love my kids and maybe I do think to much of them. They are much more than animals to me. They give me more in return than I ever do for them.

Thats your opinion Jim and you know I respect it. On the other hand I learned when I was 12 not to get too attached to animals. That said if a dog bites me or any one in my family it dies right then and there no questions ask.

And I respect you and your opinion David. It's just the way I have been all my life. If a dog is vicious and a threat to me or my family then I will do what needs to be done. It's hard to explain what my dogs mean to me but they provide me happiness and laughter and love at times when things don't look so good.I can understand not wanting to be so attached to a dog. Being so attached it is very hard when you lose one but the years you have them far out weights the sorry when they leave us.

I totally understand what your saying Jim. When I was around 12 I had this ole mutt I named Poncho. I loved that dog more than anything in the world. The problem was we lived on the busest street in Decatur. One day I was out bird hunting around the neighbor (You could bird hunt in those days without someone calling the police to you).I'm sure you can guess the rest of the story ole Poncho run out in front of a car a got killed. I was totally devastated and I made my self a vow that I would NEVER get that attached to another animal ever again. I have had many different dogs, horses, cats and cattle but i do not allow myself to become to attached to them. Some lessons you learn early in life you never forget. thumbup

Folks that put animals of any kind on the same level as humans worry me.

It is a shame that stories about people mistreating animals sometimes get more compassion than mistreating children.

Most of the stories about mistreated animals come from the bs propaganda garbage that groups like PETA or the humane society put out. All they are trying to do is make people feel sorry for these animals so donations will flow in.

IMO there is nothing sadder than a mistreated or abused child. What makes it bad is there are many parents who abuse their children but never realize it. As far as more or less compassion I never really thought about that. If I have compassion for someone or something I don't think I feel more or less for different situations.

The thing that bothers me is someone who gets a pet and never interacts with it. They put it outside and give it food and water once a day if the pet is lucky. You shouldn't put them on the same level as a human but they deserve more than just a bowl of food every day or so. Why would anyone go to the trouble and expense if that's all they plan on doing with them.

I don't think that is the case here, however I promise that if you find someone that abuses animals there is a correlation to an abusive person if not psychopath.

I recall growing up my grandparents had a German Shepard, he was as kind a dog as ever. He however bit my sis, she was petting him in his doghouse, I came up to the side of it and hit the dog house. that's why he bit my sis.

What story did I tell my dad?

Thank goodness the dog wasn't put down, he never bit anyone after that and it was all my fault.

I've been bit several times breaking up dog fights, gotta look at the reason it happens.

and like mentioned to me they are more than just some creature, surely the chocolate lab at he soldiers funeral portrays that

just had to bury my sweet female lab after 16 years, I spent the last month catering to her every need and will do it again for the next dog if need be
