I know I'll stir up a hornet's nest but watching one of those long range hunting shows on TV and I just don't go for it. Hunting is supposed to be about getting close to critters, not sniping one at 775 yards. Not questioning that skill is involved but I just don't care for it. Maybe I'm just jealous because I don't have the eyes to shoot at specks on the horizon. Wouldn't berate those guys but I'll take mine 100 yards and in, preferably way in. What happened to 200 yards being a long shot? A guy that shoots one at 18 with a bow at Skyline ranks way higher in my book than a 775 yard at a stag in New Zealand.

I do get what you're saying, but to me I think it's super cool to see them shoot something that far away. I'd like to just hit a target that far.

Ah heck I'm just trying to get a discussion going. I probably wouldn't say no either but I'd rather go to Giles Island with a bow.

Hunting is Supposed to be about getting close to critters, Not sniping one at 775 yards. Who made that rule? I read the definition of hunting twice, and I still don't see it grin

Hunting and the reason we do it is as different to each of us as is the food we like or the wife we choose. I like to have family and good friends along on the trip. And I like to see a deer or two each time out. The doe my son shot this last year at 50 yds was a bigger highlight for me than the 9 pointer I shot at 170 yds. I have shot a few good bucks at 300+ with a rifle and the little 6 pointer that I shot with my bow means more to me. Had one of my deer been shot at 700+, who knows, it's the circumstances surrounding the kill that makes the hunt memorable, not the kill itself.

It ain't like shooting one with a rifle at 150yds is any big feat. literally the only differences in shooting one at 150 vs 750, the long one takes a lot more shooting skill, and the short one you have to worry about the wind more. They ain't gonna see your azz either way.

I read an article several years ago about 1000 yard bucks. The hunters would set up in a mountainous area, spot deer on the opposite mountain and poke a few shots at it. The deer often didn't know they were being shot at and would often just walk around. They admitted they didn't kill a lot of them, but they also said they didn't go up the mountain and check for blood.

There is no skill in a 775 yard shot either way you put it.yes it has been done but it is probably a once in a couple hundred shots and thats when there is no wind.i know i could not do it like the other guy said i,ll stay with my 150 to 300 yard range .

So your saying there's no skill involved, in making a 775 yard shot? crazy confused

pure numbers wise a heck of a lot less than are wounded and lost under 150.....

percentage wise I'd bet it is still less, most longrange shooters are better shots than the Joe Average deer hunter who checks to see IF his gun is still sighted in every fourth year.....

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

No skill?? Bless your heart.

I was one of the few who could make those shots in the military and I was lucky enough to be put in situations where I could learn why and hone that skill even more.

I very rarely get to use it in this geographic area - it doesn't lend itself to long sight distances.

After spending a couple of weeks in the Midwest last year and seeing how much different their terrain is , I understand how different our hunting is here in the South. I have had more success finding them slipping through the woods and trails. Rarely have any of my shots been over 75 yards.

200 yds is a long shot. Anyone that says there's not more deer lost/wounded with a 700 yd shot is simply wrong in my opinion. There are things like wind and animal movement that simply can't be controlled or quantified.
