Never done it. Never tried. But I was thinking about trying it maybe one afternoon after work if I can get off early enough. What time in the evening are you guys hearing them sound off?

I don't hear them often, usually when I roost them Im hunting and hear them fly up.
On occasion one might let out a gobble.
Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Sometimes they get fired up. The bird I killed sunday morning gobbled 25-30 times saturday evening. I dont remember the time, but he started prob 30 min before dark

Never had much luck roosting them. But have on occasion been lucky enough to walk in and sit right under them.

When I go to roost one, I usually go to known roosting areas that I can get into with no chance of bumping birds. I go right around fly up time and listen. Once it starts getting pretty dark I'll owl some. When I go, it's really more of a confirmation that a bird is there or not. I have had good luck getting birds to gobble in the evenings on some properties though

Roosted one this evening. I didn't hear him fly up but I owled on my way out and he sounded off. This was about 15 minutes before dark.

In my experience if they gobble in the evening they hit the ground coming to you in the morning!!!
I haven't been able to hunt the afternoons this year because of the workload my company is experiencing this year but in the past on an evening hunt if he gobbles early enough to hunt they are normally easy to call in. And if you run out of daylight and he flies up he's a dead bird as long as you don't make a mistake.

Crenshaw nailed it. Owl before dark, and i have cut with a mouth call, about sunset and got them to gobble. Other than that listen for fly-up. You can hear them fly up from several 100 yards if its quiet.

The locator call works sometimes and I've gotten em nailed down. But like most things with turkeys, it doesn't work every time.
Doc- take your mallard call and give em a hen welcome. You think I'm crazy....it works. Crow or owl will work too.

This has been my experience on my land, BUT -- on other properties I've hunted before, you can roost 'em more easily. Just all depends on what the birds like to do on your land, I guess.
