One of my neighbors at the lake set up a stand alone solar system for his pier. He bought a complete kit from Costco and had it connected to a box that held several golf cart batteries. It ran two boatlifts, switched led lights and two trickle chargers for the boats. Also had a few outlets - was a nice setup except for the price - think he said including the batteries the setup was around 4k. I think your best bet on seeing a return would be a solar assist hot water system.

Gulf Power is building a large solar panel farm on the northwest side of Niceville, Florida. BIG operation. They bout to build 3 solar farms

RSA is about to give a solar company the acreage to install a solar farm, pay for it and pay them to set it up and then buy the power from them. Only the guvment works that way. Where's that going to be on RSA? Corner of Magazine and Redstone. I'm bidding the fiber to it this week.

I know the solar industry in general is booming right now. I am the shipping coordinator for a galvanizing plant and we are shipping truck load after truck load of 6" steel beams to different solar farms out west. Places like California,Texas,Colorado and Arizona. We have one project that we are shipping to in Florence,AL. The beams are driven into the ground with a pile driver and solar panels are then mounted on top of them.

Wait until the windmill craze hits here, like it did in Texas. One can make decent bank with those on your property. One reason I invested a ranch in West Texas four years ago. 100% wind rights were included in the sale.

One of the major problems with solar in Alabama is that your fine folks at the Public Service Commission and the Legislature
have allowed themselves to be the puppets of Alabama Power Company - which refuses to allow excess power generated by solar to be sold back to APC. Practically every State in the country makes power companies adapt to this except ours. I cannot think of the technical terminology, but it is a MAJOR impediment to solar in Alabama being what it is supposed to be. There was an article about this on Al dot com awhile back. My brother in law who runs a solar company in Texas could not believe it. What's the math equation on that? Surely you could rig up your solar to run at a specified time to use less ApCo supplied power. From my understanding, solar has to have a "bank" to store power. Let the bank charge up and switch off your main(ApCo) and run reserves(solar) to empty and let it recharge. Sorry but I don't know. It is not my area of expertise. I just generally know about the problem in our State re ApCo and solar. Hopefully that will change, but probably not while "Twinkle" the triple cow sow corporatist country club RINO heads the PSC. I do think solar is a great thing though. When I finally get around to building my end of the world cabin I am going to have it all off grid on solar. Gonna buy an extra set of everything and put it under ground and lined with lead so that when an EMP hits I will have an extra set of everything to get back up and running.

This will not be the case in Alabama as the average annual windspeeds are too low without a major technology leap to be cost competative.
As for solar I have installed several standalone and grid tied systems. In general the ROI is 15-20 years for Alabama as we have low energy cost as compared to other states and little to no state tax incentives outside the federal ones which may expire. However this may change with the continued war on coal.

Yeah, I guess we dodged the bullet on this one. There will be two more things happen soon enough that'll take two more spots probably. Seems like it always goes that way. Ugh.

I was at this solar farm today. They have 640 acres I don't know if they are putting all of it in solar panels,but I was told it would power 1300 homes. Sounds like a huge investment for so little power. I was also told the reason solar power was so hot right now was maintenance was very expensive on wind power and never ending.
