I was considering spending a good bit of time on this lake this summer. I was wondering if there are any tricks to navigating it. I'm mainly concerned with 2 areas.

1. I like fishing around the tailraces, and I know that there are some islands on the upper end. Any advice in this area would be appreciated, where to run, not to run, shallow areas, rocky areas.

2. Hatchett creek: I know that it's pretty big where can you run in it or can you?

spending time on mitchell is a great idea. it's beautiful, and offers really good fishing. (especially for spots, but good largemouth too.) it's overlooked in my opinion.

1) the tailrace area is good. as long as there is some current. you won't catch many fish if they aren't running water. You'll have no problem running close to the dam, just stay away from the banks. Once you get to the bridge you have to be careful. you'll need to stay on the left side. when you see yellowleaf creek on your left, you'll need to shut her down and idle. there are scattered boulders everywhere.

2)You can run hatchett for a long way. just stay in the middle of the creek and you'll be fine. it's deep with a lot of grass and pockets off the creek, good for heads. you only have to be careful entering the creek. those small islands at the main lake have points that stick out that can mess you up. once you get past them you're alright for a good ways.

Is Higgins Ferry the only boat launch?

it's the most accessible. there are two just below the bridge at the dam, on either side. one is called cedar circle (coosa side) it's a 3$ fee. the other is on the chilton side (free)but not very well maintained. there is one in blue creek, and i'm not sure how to get to it by road.

Mitchell is a safe lake to run. Hatchett and Weogufka can be tricky towards the back.

yea and just watch for the skiers in hatchett and weogulfga thats there hot spot and they will be heavy in there all summer
