Wife, son, and myself are all organ donors. If our physical bodies can help someone after our passing - then why not give them an opportunity.

if I'm dead I don't need my organs anymore if.....that's the question. And folks have made a wrong determination too early many times.

Not saying you shouldn't donate. But some people would rather just leave it up to family members to do what they want with the body. If they want to donate then so be it. But reality is once your on that card as an organ donor the family has no say in the matter at all. Mistakes do happen and people do get diagnosed wrong and sometimes do to trying to save an organ.

I am an organ donor. My wife is alive because someone donated an organ. Thank you Lord.

1) Donate your organs, you don't need them anymore 2) expensive funerals are stupid 3) just put me in the ground out in the woods with a bunch of white oak acorns buried with me so maybe one can grow in my place. My 2 cents Check out Bio Urn. Body is cremated, mixed with compost and placed inside a bio degradable urn with a tree seedling of your choice. Then the tree is planted at the final resting place of your choosing. I've selected a post oak and to be buried at the outdoor picnic area at the ranch back in Texas. My buddies there said they will make sure and water it after every night of beer drinking. I really miss those guys!

Bear with me here. This is a hard concept for a lot of folks to comprehend but it's really fairly simple. My opinion was influenced by an Auburn economics professor that I had years ago. David Kaserman is no longer with us but he almost died at a young age while needing an organ transplant. Later in life he wrote many papers supporting the need to create a market for selling organs in order to help more people receive the organs they desperately need. Right now, there is no incentive other than altruism to encourage people to become organ donors. Lots of folks will tell you that selling organs is a terrible idea. This seems to be the position supported by the AMA. My main problem with this is that the AMA wants people to donate their organs out of the kindness of their hearts but they damn sure aren't performing the operations at no charge. Doesn't that seem a little self serving on behalf of the AMA? Dr. Kaserman's position on this was basically that if a market was allowed it would create economic incentive for more folks to donate and thus save more lives. I balk at the notion that selling organs is immoral. It seems just as immoral to me for a doctor to charge thousands of dollars for a procedure in which the main component was donated free of charge. Here's a link with many quotes from the papers and research done by Dr. Kaserman. http://www.organselling.com/expert.htm#Kaserman

Surgeons, Hospitals benefit financially from transplant surgeries. Why not allow the donor of these organs(or the loved ones left behind) to benefit from it?

Don't know if it's still true but they USED to send the bill to the family donating the organs for the labor of removing them. I know they did when my grandmother died. Of course this was in 1964. If it's still that way, then that's kind of a kick to the stones. Especially since they then turn around and charge the receiving family for the organ. Again, that was 1964 so it may not be that way anymore.

I'm not disputing what you're saying ford150man, but according to AOC(Alabama Organ Center), there is no cost to the family of a donor. That practice would discourage most people from even considering it. http://alabamaorgancenter.org/quick-facts.php

Since I mentioned it earlier, curiosity had me look up the procedure for donating your body to science. At one time I thought you could pre-sell your body to science. I now know that is illegal, but if you donate to the groups that deal in them: 1. When you die, they come and get the body after any organs you wish to donate are harvested, take care of certificate of death and assist with life insurance filing 2. After whoever is going to be studying the cadaver is through, it is cremated at a licensed crematorium and ashes are returned to the family. 3. they do a few other little nice token things for the family 4. All of it is at no cost. Cheapest way to get out of funeral costs there is.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

That practice would discourage most people from even considering it. The fact that they can "sell" my organs and I can't is kind of a discouragement, too. Yeah, yeah, no charge for the organ, blah blah blah, just a quarter million to install it.
