I bought my son an 870 for Christmas and that was the first things he asked for. I bought the $10 tap kit at harbor freight and it was fairly simple took all of 30 minutes
8-40 tap

Pender precision rifles (also known as JP Precision Firearms) in Leeds. He's done a lot of work for me and others that I know. Great work and a good guy to deal with also...

Assuming the mount screws are 8-40. A lot of them are 6-48.

Even if the scope called gor 6-48 I'd step it up to the more reliable and stronger 8-40

Agreed, assuming there is enough meet there to step up to a #8 screw. A general rule of thumb is that in steel, you want as much thread depth as possible, but no less the the width of the screw. Aluminum is a whole other story....I was amazed you that you found an 8-40 tap at HF. MY point was simply that in the case of a 6-48, I have not found those at HF. At the same time I only buy those sort of taps from Brownells, so I've never checked at HF. You won't find either at a run of the mill hardware store. Well I can't say won't but I doubt it.
