I live in an old 1940s farm house out in the woods. Every darn critter in the woods at one time or another has somehow got in the house, attic, garage, or basement. Generally they are just driveby but the worst have been squirrels and wood rats. The only way to stop them is a process of blocking and eradication. I shot right at forty squirrels last year within 100 yds of home, usually closer. That stopped the dogs flea problem and squirrels in the garage. I go under the house regularly and look for signs of rats and making sure everything is sealed. Best hole stopper I've used is spray foam, coarse steel wool and a large screw driver. If the tip of the screwdriver can fit so can a mouse or rat. Spray in some foam then follow with steel wool jammed in on top of it, then more foam and steel wool until its packed. They can't get through it. Eventually they will stop. Got to find their access though.
