I know and have dealt with most everyone they writer interviewed. The fact that he used them as a credible source for anything loses me. Selma certainly has its issues, but it is not now the fault of the white man as much as it is the fault of a welfare society. That wouldn't sell many copies of whatever this article was in. I can't fully understand what life is like for black folks living in Selma or black folks living anywhere. I do know that I have never considered the color of my skin as an aid to anything. I was raised by hard working parents and taught to work hard. Being permanently unemployed or living on welfare. or selling drugs has never been a thought that crossed my mind. I wasn't raised to think that way. IMO, the biggest problem with (Insert any poor rural city) is that people accept living on welfare as normal and the government has promoted it as such. I can't begin to understand how a persons spirit can be broken enough to think that living off welfare is acceptable. What normal person wakes up and decides to live off the government or be a drug dealer? The government has ruined a whole segment of our society and that part of our society is so blinded that they can't see it.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

I won't name names, but one of the interviewees is a member of the biggest drug dealing family around. Notoriously bad news. On the good side though, the hunting and fishing are still fine in this area.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Interesting. I ate lunch in Selma today. Ifn the AA waitress woulda ever brought a refill for my tea, I woulda given her a $2 tip. Since she didn't, she only got $1.
So I guess I am a racist?

So I guess I am a racist? Correct. You should've rewarded her laziness to avoid such a tag.

I went to Selma a month or so ago to look at a job cleaning the airport mentioned in the article. While there I had 2 seperate cars slam on their breaks in front of me after starting to go from a red light. I assumed in an attempt to make me rear end them. Luckily I was paying attention. I was happy to leave Selma and don't plan to be back anytime soon.

It's funny how black people can't get a fair shot in Alabama. The writer should have driven from Selma to Anniston where I work. Its pretty much a majority black town. Plenty of black folks here work jobs like everyone else. Heck, I work for a black owned company. I have black friends and family members. I don't see any of them being oppressed by whitey.
I don't feel sympathy for these thugs in the story. Regardless of circumstances, a man with 4 felonies can't can't blame whitey for the fact that he can't get a job. He made his choices knowing the consequences. If they wanted to change, they would.
The problem is that these people won't take responsibility for their own choices. Notice the guy complained because they will lock you up for standing in your yard holding a joint. Like the evil cops are doing something wrong harassing all these poor folks just trying to survive.
I preach this to my kids, people who work for me, and anyone else who will listen: Life is a series of choices and consequences. Every now and then there are exceptions, but for the most part people are responsible for where they are in life. Those who learn to make good choices usually end up ok. Those who don't, usually end up as failures. But no one wants to hear about personal responsibility these days.

Agreed. In my experience anyone that spends any time blaming their circumstances on someone else (correctly or not) is generally not working to better their circumstances. This applies to any pursuit in life. If the umpire called you out and you thought it was a bad call because he didn't like you, you probably didn't run sprints later trying to get faster. If you didn't see any deer this year because of your neighbors baiting or wandering dogs you probably didn't spend any time improving your own property or looking for the escape routes big bucks use during pressure. If we tell young black children that their only opportunities for success lay with entertainment, sports or crime because all other paths are blocked by a racist conspiracy it should be of little surprise that education and meaningful employment fall by the wayside. Dwelling on it puts up a mental block where your life is beyond your control, thus its someone else's responsibility to make it better. This is, to me, the root problem with most of the methods of "fixing inequality". Black people, for any number of reasons, are likely to face significant disadvantages in many aspects of life. The current solution of telling of telling people it is beyond their control because of a vast national conspiracy and they should just sit back and wait for the government to make it better does more harm than good. On the other hand, as a conservative who spends more time than I'd like dealing with the results of the current state of the black community it is apparent to me that neither of the approved Conservative answers, "heal thyself" or "what problem, everything is fine" won't improve things in my lifetime. Recognition of these basic facts would, in my opinion, right the conservative ship and sponsor a rebirth in the conservative party. I think that as soon as someone smarter than me comes up with a more utilitarian, thought out approach with a chance of any degree of success and conservatives adopt the platform our country will heal and grow. I despise every cent spent on the "you've got it tough, here's free money" approach but I would gladly send that same funding in a more considered direction. It is obvious to me that crime and poverty in black communities doesn't just affect the black community. It spills over and its ugly stains cement resentment and distrust already festering in our nation. What a world we would live in if there weren't whole neighborhoods or cities deemed unsafe for our traffic. What a world when our economy booms because our productivity reaches its potential with all walks of American life.

It is ironic this shows up here. Just yesterday I was reading on a forum for Southern Illinois and Mizzou hunters and there is a town at the southern most tip of Illinois.......Cairo. River town that suffered much the same way as Selma. Amazing the similarities and opinions. Cairo is pretty much a ghost town and has tons of issues much like Selma does.
I agree. Folks think because you are white that you are automatically given a fair shake, yet in my life time I have suffered from Equal Opportunity and been turned down for jobs, although I was qualified because the federal govt fights racism with racism.
I am working in an absolute shucks-hole paying for my student loans because I busted my ass and went to school and am up to my arm pits in debt. I am where I am by the grace of God Almighty and hard work. I have worked with several dirt poor black men that went the same route and have "made it" in life and feel the same way I do. Hard work never hurt nobody. I've passed through Cairo hunting. Place looks like a movie set for post apocalypse. What forum?

the most racist folks I know are black. They hate all white people I asked a black man once that worked for me why he hated white folks so much and his answer was because the white people made us slaves. The laziest man on my crew. The first slaves in the U.S. were Irish and Chinese. I don't hear them whining.

The writer failed to mention that Black Americans (they are NOT African Americans unless they have duel citizenship)have suffered even more under Obama as far as joblessness but I guess that's a white mans fault as well (come to think of it, it partly is since some white people had to help vote that piece of crap in). They haven't suffered joblessness...they have just figured out that under Obama they don't have to work. He will take care of their race.

1st world problems... It isn't easy 'making your way in this world today.' (cheer's ref.) Bringing children into it with no plan is gambling against the house with the deck stacked in the house's favor. Teen urges and little parental control equal babies with a hard row to hoe. Sure it hurts us to hear about those who are suffering, but on the other hand, those of us who work, work, work our lives away striving for a better life for our family shouldn't have to be obligated to financially support a segment of society that makes choices so poorly that they can't (or don't even know how to) make their own living.

Perfect! Such a simple saying, and it confounds me how many people get it wrong. Most say "hard road to ho"...in the case of Selma, come to think of it, that might actually more appropriate..

"I also mentioned their fears of the neighborhood. Escrow stopped playing with his phone, looked at me, eyes drilling into me, smile gone.
“We never harm tourists. Never. Got that. We keep our shucks to ourselves. They come here because special things DID happen here. Just wish they would happen again.”
Isn't that wonderful? Escrow, king of the coloreds, speaks for all of his underlings when he says they don't harm tourists. Seems like a reliable trustworthy guy with 4 felonies lol
