BowtechDan this is tuff. Coming from someone who has raised hunting dogs for years. I usually make that call after a few days of not eating and-or when they cant get up and start to develop sores from laying around. At that point I take them out for one last hunt just me and them. Ive had a few that pained me to do so but I would hope if the role was reversed they would put me out of my misery. Good luck Hate to hear it

Keep us posted, BowtechDan. I'm hoping that with the mentioned aspirin or some type of "doggy glucosamine" that your old buddy will spring back up like a champ. Here's hoping for the best.

Have heard glucosamine is good. Has no negative effects and is pretty cheap. Takes about 3 months to start working good. I've talked to alot of people about it who have arthritis, all of them said it worked as long as they took it regularly. You can get it at wal mart.

Give it one Advil wrapped in cheese and see if it helps. My beagle had a ruptured disc in her neck and she could barely move, I could give her one Advil and it was like nothing was wrong with her. It may not save your dog but it may make it more comfortable and give you more time until that time comes. They say it is bad for their liver but I can assure you it was a miracle drug until that time came.

Talk to the Vet and the Vet can tell you if the dog is in pain or not. If the dog is really in pain, then maybe it's time, if not love the dog every day.
We put one down about 9 years ago that was 3 weeks shy of his 16th birthday. My Dad was completely against it because of his religious beliefs?? The dog had a stroke and couldn't even walk. We had to make him do it, and my Dad still says to this day it was wrong to do it????? God gave us dogs to take care of, and it's our job to do that.

Rub around the tops of the hips...If there's soreness and pain they will let you know....We just lost our little dog and it stayed in its bed for the last two days and refused water...
Set up a vet visit but he didn't make it till then....Its a hard choice to make one way or another....

Well, my "Amy" girl is asleep now. Watching her collapse twice this week was too much to bear. Took her to the vet today and buried her in the back yard. She would have been 15 years old in Aug. She was a good dog. I was face-to-face with her last breath. Here she was this morning. Her back legs just couldn't keep going.

Dan, sorry to hear this and for your loss. I never cease to be amazed at how attached we can get to dogs. It's good that you put her first and that she's not suffering anymore.

Breaks my heart. The fact that you got her to 15 means she was well cared for. And at some point you're going to have to make the call which is tough but you can be satisfied that you gave her your best and just cherish those memories.

Sorry man I feel your pain from personal experience. It's very hard. I lost my best friend 3 years ago and it broke my heart. I was away planting food plots when it happened. It sucks no matter how old you get.

Sorry for the loss of Amy. We never had dogs growing up and now both my boys have dogs. They're just like members of the family.

Hate that we have to do it but it is the right thing. My lab is gonna be 13 in a few weeks, has a mouth cancer and struggles if he doesn't get his anti inflammatories. It's only a matter of months, I think....
