Not too much gun. Matter of personal choice. I looked at both and went with a Mark V 7mm Weatherby magnum with a muzzle brake and Leupold 4x12 vx2. I like it combined with the Weatherby ammunition but it is expensive. It will drop some deer. I figured if I ever needed more gun than a 7 mag, it would give me an excuse to buy another Mark V in 340 Weatherby or 375 H&H. If you don't plan on buying another rifle get the 300.

I shoot a 300 when horn hunting with 210 Berger VLDs. I do not shoot this round during the herd thinning process. The VLDs do a lot of damage regardless of where you put the round.

What's the difference in a 300 and a 30-06? A little bit of velocity and a whole lot of powder, barrel length, and recoil. (Unless you're using super long high BC bullets made to shoot grizzly bears )

Im a savage guy and I have one in a 300 win mag. I hunted with it more this year than normal. Im usually carrying it in .270. I will warn you though, savage with a synthetic stock in 300 will knock the living piss out of you. It kicks like a pissed off fair mule. I had to put a 1 piece DMV mount on it this summer because the scope wouldnt stay zeroed due to the recoil. 6 rounds to get it dialed back in and I didnt want no more!

I have a savage weather warrior in 300 win mag and i never feel it kick, shooting at an animal. I don't target practice with it. Its the only gun i deer hunt with and can drive tacks with it. I have a leopold mount and varix-111 scope and haven't had to adjust the scope since i dialed it in 17 years ago. You might want to buy a better mount and rings, make sure they loctite them as well. I actually dropped this gun 8' and it landed on the scope and its still dead on.

My 338 WM is also a Savage 116 weather warrior, but I swapped the snythetic stock for a heavier walnut stock from a 114 and also put on a limbsaver recoil pad and have not noticed anything different while hunting vs any other rifle I've ever shot at a critter. Sound though? Yeah its a little loud...

They are both a wash. 300wm will have more energy down range and a harder kick. The 7mm will have less recoil and has the best range of bullets with the higher BC. That being said I have the 300 sendero, love the gun, though I never shoot it anymore. Actually may sell it soon
Only accurate rifles are interesting.

My savage started life as a 7 mag but I screwed that junk off and put a magnum contour 300 WM barrel on it. I like 165 gn partitions for deer but 180's and a 300 go together like peas and carrots

Magnums normally are .532 case diameter standard aught six family is .473. 300 or 7mag? both work.

i agree , no such thing as over kill . if you can handle the kick , go with the 300 . i like the 7mag better though . i hunted with a Ruger and a Rem 7mag for a long time till i started hunting out of pop-up blinds now i'm loving a h&r single shot 35 whelen .
i done some shooting with a browning 300 and felt like it kicked less than the ruger 7mag i have .

There's only one degree of dead.
The .300 mag family and the 7mm mag family are both good rounds for all around hunting but by no means do our easy to kill, soft whitetail deer here in the south require that much bullet/velocity.
If you want a .300 mag or a 7mm mag by all means buy one. That being said, most issues I've dealt with over the years with hunters using these magnum calibers is they can't shoot the gun properly due to flinching from recoil. Or, just as common is the mentality that "I can hit him in the foot and kill him" is a bigger issue. You still must have proper bullet placement regardless of caliber.
Some folks decide to go with a muzzle break on these magnums and IMO that causes even more issues. You flinch from the muzzle blast, not the recoil.

I like the 300 with 165 gr Hornadys. Lotta thump with not too much recoil. Ben2's 180 gr are killas too.
