We just got a GSD puppy. Anyone have any insight on dog trainers in Bham metro area? Looking at protective training, off leash obedience, etc. Thanks.

The best one around here moved to South Carolina Chris Amrick. He and I trained my female. Get the basic obedience down. Then move on from there. He warned me about so called personal protection trainers around here. There are not any he would recommend around here. But there are a couple in Tn and Ga

I would never leave my dog with a trainer, on our first GSD, we had a trainer come to our house for an hour for seven straight days. It gave us an idea of what to do and I think it was money well spent.

'Huntress knows a good trainer down here that just moved here from Tn...she worked with one of our dogs, and trains K9's, too, I believe.

I do know a trainer and she just moved back down to the Andalusia area from TN. She and her late husband did lots of training with K-9s for police and for search and rescue. She continues to train. Let me know if you are interested in her information and I will send it in a private message.

Schutzhund club is the best place to start. You'll learn more about the breed and your dog. It will teach you all about obedience and your dogs personal abilities and drives. With this said, i highly recommend you to find a schutzhund club and at least watch and talk to people from a club about gsd cause a lot of dogs are not up for protection and with help from knowledgeable helpers you can find out where your pup stands and if it possesses the drives to get you where you want to be. In other words some dogs are meant to track, some do agility the best, some do obedience better than others, some are a great house dog, but a select few will have the straight up drive to eat your rear up and do it calmly and not fearfully. Please do not use YouTube as a training tool,it's great for somethings but not training a gsd in protection. It's cool to see certain things and video clips but you can ruin a dog if you train protection without the proper equipment and experienced help.

I totally agree with furnfeather. And some of the others. Never leave your GSD with the trainer. The training needs to be done with you and your family.

Here's 2 clubs that i know of around st.clair. jefferson-st clair shutzhund and central Alabama schutzhund club. Never been to the first one but casc is a very good group of people. Both have a Facebook page. I'm not trying to sponsor casc but can speak about the people out there and they're very helpful, professional and friendly. I'm glad that i found them and able to train with them and call them friends.
