I just moved to Fort Rucker. I'm looking for pointers from people who know the post well or have had some success there. I'd like to hunt turkey and hog. Thank you!

Hunted fort Rucker years ago. I hated it. I found other means of hunting. It's such a pain in the butt. Checking in and out and having to keep abreast of what zones were closed on certain days. Then having to keep the card in the windshield continuously updated. One small date change of hunting 2 days in a row could buy you a suspension of hunting privledges or a ticket. Then you have to always worry about some jackarse shooting you or the GW's. Some of them were real jerks. Not to mention every time you hunt if it's on base you have to be checked thru the gate. (I understand that part and totally agree) but doesn't help none the less with accessibility. Also always have to worry about low flying helicopters doing training. It doesn't really bother the deer but it gets old.
Well to be honest I hated everything about hunting out there.
If you live on base you wouldn't have to worry about the gate issue. I've never been successful in hunting turkeys on fort Rucker. I know an old timer that always did well out there but he said they are very hard to hunt due to pressure. A lot of times he said they came in silent and never gobbled.
I never saw hogs on the base but heard they are a real problem in certain areas

I killed a turkey there this year its not that bad. You just have to use google maps and study the land figure out good areas. Its a pain to call in but some huge deer have been killed there this year!

Turkeys are everywhere out there Ive never turkey h8unted there and not heard numerous gobbles. You can ride perimeter rd and see turkey deer and hogs almost every time you go

I live on post and I don't mind using the phone to check in. I've been out several times and only seen one little doe. I've heard some gunshots. I would like to know where people are seeing the deer. I don't have much time left, so I'm more hopeful for turkey. Again any advice for any species is appreciated.

I work 3rd shift out there and see several good bucks this time of year around the hay field close to ozark gate, Knox fld, around that bridge below the warehouses and up close to hanchy fld

never hunted there myself, but have heard from folks that do. You must have hunter safety card, no matter your age. Have to register any weapon ahead of time.

Rucker was a Mecca for deer hunting in the late 60s, 70s and 80s, then the management and regs all ruined it. It is nothing like what it used to be.
And coyote predation of fawns have been worse there than just about anywhere. Deer population collapsed.
Interesting note: before it was Ft. Rucker it was an old hunting preserve ( the massive area was not good for agriculture like surrounding areas but great for wildlife and loaded with wildlife).

I've been bow hunting a few times now and it's been pretty disappointing. I've found a few signs of deer in certain areas, but seen very few. I've seen many coyote tracks. Time to get the rifle out...
