I have a friend whos son wanted to be a warden and went to Auburn for schooling. I dont have all the details but this is what I know . He went thru the biologist training etc and after talking to a lot of people he added some classes for timber/ag etc. He ended up being hired by a timber company 3 months before he graduated for almost twice the starting salary of a warden.
He has all his weekends off to hunt. Gets free access to hunt the timber companies land. Co truck, retirement whole 9 yards.
Wardens are working the most during hunting season so that would way limit your own hunting not to mention the "on call" part of it. I agree with JMJ on the on call. Ive had a on call job for 25 years and it is a pain.
I kick my butt everytime I think about not going into the military at 18. By 38 ya have your 20 yrs in and a gov retirement. 20 yrs sounds like a long time now but 20 years flys by and the military opens so many more doors for you.
I have another friend whos son was a MP for 8 yrs. He came out and decided he wanted to be a LEO. Well after talking to a lot of people he ended up hiring in with a "security guard" co that works gates at military facilities. They only hire ex military people. Pay started out at 60k a yr and all he does is ck badges coming thru the guard house. Well above what PD's were offering and no working out in the heat/cold, no wrecks in the rain,or dealing with drunks etc.
Talk to all the people you can before you make a decision. The military isn't bad. I will retire in about three years, I could get out and get a good federal, state, or DoS if I wanted. The down side to it is I would be away from my family alot so, I'm going to pass on that. On the upside I will be retired at 40 with medical, and drawing a pension.
