Think about it. Give yourself some time. I have a job where I get called in to work a lot. This morning I'm sitting in the stand and phone rings at 7:30, busted water line, had to leave after just seeing 2 eight points fighting. Just advice from someone further down the road than you are, if I had it to do again, I'd do something that doesn't involve call. That takes something from you that you'll never get back..time.
All the money in the world isn't worth it. Plus, from what I've seen a GW doesn't have much time to hunt. Just think it over. Good luck to you.

Welcome to the forum young man! You'll get some good advice from the GW and wildlife biologists on here. As long as you love it, go for it.

Welcome, good to see you have an ambition. However, you are young, take time to have fun. Not saying to goof off, study hard and you will probably have a better idea of what you might want to do with your life in your junior or senior year in high school. Study hard and keep your options open.

Post up some pics of your harvest and smile when you do.

Do what makes you happy and don't worry about anything else. You will change your mind 50 times between now and senior year when you have to decide. Lay some block and brick one summer and roof another so you will know what you don't want to do for a living and keep your head on straight, off drugs, and work hard and it will come together when the time is right.

Yerk is dead on ! LOL You'll change your mind. Do some construction during summers. That will tell you if you are cut out for that or an office job. Please hit the books ! No matter what you choose an education is important. Hunt safe !

Get your education and do the absolute best you can in whatever you do. Do not be disappointed if life doesnt follow a scripted plan, because it wont. Life is a journey, enjoy the ride wherever it takes you.

I was educated as a Biologist, wanting to be a Wildlife Biologist. I ended up in Agriculture working with those weird plant people. I am not a plant person, but I probably make more money doing this than as a Biologist. NOT what I had planned but everything worked out for the best.

Just play the best game you can. And Pray!!!

Tracker Jr, I'm a retired GW. IF a GW job is what you want then I'd advise study hard, make good grades, get in at least two years in Law Enforcement Junior College or four year college.
The job is mostly law enforcement, throw in some biology, and a lot of public relations work. Learn to shoot a handgun, yer life will depend on it.
Contrary to what some say you will have pl;enty of time to hunt because of the 40 hour work week, rarely overtime(and it is scheduled). Any GW that can't find a good place to hunt ain't much of a GW. (just pick and choose WHO ya hunt with).

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

You still have plenty of time to think about it, but there's nothing wrong with getting the mind working early. Maybe Matt, Troy, or one of the other guys can answer this, but it would be really cool if you could do a ride along with a Warden or Biologist. Not sure if that's all due to liability, but it could be helpful if so.

One of my college economics professors had a good quote: "It's hard to make a living doing what lots of other people had rather be doing". What he meant by that is that those types of jobs are very competitive because lots of guys think they want to do it. Listen to the advice above and consider going to college even though you may be able to get that job without a degree. The degree may give you an advantage in getting hired later. It will certainly open some other doors for good jobs while you're waiting on the state to hire the next batch of wardens.

Having lots of options is always good. A college degree just gives you more options.

Take the next 6-10 years and work as many different jobs as you can when not in school. Find something you like doing and start your own business some time around age 25. May have to start 2 or 3 but eventually you will work for your self, enjoy what you do, and make a good living. It takes a special kind of person to be a gw. That may well be your calling but get lots of experience in lots of areas to be sure. Good luck with what ever you decide.
