What's yall's opinion on Sako rifles? Have always shot Remington and have never considered even shooting anything else. However, I shot a Sako lil while back and was quite impressed. I've been shooting my Rem 700 300 wsm for past 10 years and getting the itch for a new powder burner. I know how accurate and reliable Remingtons are, just curious as to just how accurate a Sako shoots? They are very proud of them, however, over the past 22 years I've only used 2 different rifles. Both of which were remingtons.

I own 3. I think all the newer ones have a 5 shot 1" at 100 yard guarantee.

They are proud of them for sure, but they are nice rifles. Never owned one myself and probably never will as long as Remington and Weatherbys are around.

Sako is a quality brand,high but worth it.

Which model did you shoot? What impressed you the most?

I believe it was the A7. I only got to shoot it once. They seem to be very well made, very smooth trigger, tight action, well balanced. Seems there is a lot of attention to detail put into the build of these guns.

I am only in the beginning phase of gathering info on these guns and looking for input from those that use them. I know the guy who has that A7 and is willing to let me shoot it as much as I would like. Which I plan to do after season. Thanks for the input!

IMHO I don't see enough difference in the A7 over a Tikka. I believe the A7 still has plastic parts which is what I don't like about the Tikka. They both have the same barrels as the Tikka has as good a barrel as any current Sako.

What I do like about the A7 is the built in weaver mount. I also like the tapered dovetail of the regular Sako mount but there are fewer choices in rings. The two piece Sako Optilock mounts are extremely heavy, especially if wanting to us them on one of the lighter rifles like the Finnlight. The one piece Optilock ringmount is an excellent mount but will only fit scopes with less than a 50mm objective. Leupold makes a ringmount for Sako but it works best with longer tubed scopes or when used on the short action guns. The Leupold ringmount won't catch to tighten until it is more than half way down the tapered dovetail.

All the above are nit picky things but sometimes important. Every Sako I have ever shot was accurate and well made. PM me sometime if you want to discuss details. I would be happy to give you a longer critique of the Sako's I have owned.

I've shot a Sako 75 7 mag for over a decade. I wouldn't trade it for 5 Remington's of any model.

How about a Remington M24?

Clark... Thanks for that info! Definitely some of the things I was curious about. I may take u up on the more in depth discussion about them. I'm rarely an impulse buyer and will research things for a while prior to purchase. Again, thanks for your help!

Anytime my friend. I love talking guns but I only peck type. it would be a lot easier to have a detailed conversation by phone.

Right now, I own an early 75 wood and blued 7mm-08, a 46 year old Forrester L579 deluxe in 243, and a 75 Finnlight in 270. I have owned one other Finnlight.

If you are ever going to be up toward Haleyville, I would be glad to take you to the range and let you try them out. I can usually get away with a small amount of notice.


BTW, not to try to push you into an impulse buy, but right now Eurooptics has a special run of black Sako rifles just under $1200. That's nearly $500 off. It's hard to get info but I believe these are stainless guns identical to a Finnlight except for a black coating. They are fluted barrels and have the same specs as the Finnlights.

Just an FYI, Sako uses specific action lengths. I believe they have 4 different action lengths depending on the caliber. There is quite a difference in weight between their 308 action length and their 30-06 action length. If I were buying a new one , I would be getting a short action since they are lighter and you have better scope mounting options.

Good to know. I was looking at 300 win. I wouldn't be opposed to 300 wsm though.

Your needs may be quite different than mine. I prefer the short actions because of the weight and going with that theme they allow easier mounting of smaller lighter scopes with the lighter rings.

If a few ounces isn't an issue at all, the two piece Optilocks are good mounts and you can even get extended ones for short tube scopes. Since you are interested in larger calibers, I doubt a few ounces of weight is much of an issue.

Looking at calibers such as a 300 Win mag, something model 75 and older might be worth looking into. I prefer the older actions but they are heavier guns, which may not be a bad thing with a 300 win. Cabelas usually has a large selection of older Sako rifles and they are IMHO bargains in the $1000-$1200 price range. Also some of the newer wood blued 85's have fantastic wood if that's to your tastes.

Model 75 Finnlight in .308 here.Tack driver, yep. I said it. Has a 2.5-8 Leupold Vari-x III with heavy duplex. Mighty fine mountain rifle, long as it doesn't let me down ( not that I expect it to) , I'll never tote anything else.

Get one, you won't regret it.

I shot a Finnlight 308 for two years and sold it. Now I shoot a Finnlight 7mag and love it! Personally I did not like the 20" barrel on the 308.

Get an older one. They are worth the money. They don't make guns like that anymore. The newer ones... meh. They shoot good but so do most other rifles that cost that much. I'd rather have a Mark V personally but to each their own.

My first rifle was a L579 Mannlicher .308. Before I had kids I told my wife to put it in my casket so I'd be ready to drop something when I got where I was going.

My uncle has an M85 Grey Wolf in 270 WSM. The fit and finish of gun is impeccable.
