there is no such thing as Public Land in Texas.... grin at least no very much.

You can go to far eastern Oklahoma and hunt Rios on public land near Cheyenne . I've done it three times and killed birds every time. 2-3 bird counties. Cheap motels and good cheap food last I went.

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

As Troy said, somewhere around 95% of the state of Texas is privately owned.

The other 5% is public ground but I "think" most of that is draw hunts and they get hammered.

If you are wanting a Rio, go to Oklahoma or Kansas. There is public ground there and from what I've heard, they don't get much pressure.

I looked into a Texas DIY hunt and decided that I'd be better suited to spend my money elsewhere. There seems to be very little public land and I couldn't be positive that any of it had good numbers of birds. All of this was done behind a keyboard so there may be a honeyhole or two but I'm more comfortable spending my hard earned money going elsewhere.

Public hunting is very limited in Texas. 99% privately owned. Turkey hunting is not that big there either. We called them "Corn Buzzards" because they could clean out a feeder in a matter of minutes.

Pick you out a town near a river with trees and stop in town, make sure you're hungry.
