Simple...
Dig down 1'
Lay down washed stone
Lay down perforated drain pipe
Lay down top coat of washed stone
Cover with dirt
Optional : If the drain is around a wall then add a layer of Visqueen plastic against the wall prior to the base layer of stone

Easiest way to check a grade in a trench is to use a length of that clear 1/4" water line, fill it with water and the water will set the level. Check the level in the trench with a couple of yard sticks and adjust for the drop in grade. 4" pipe should drain most areas, make sure it has a drain sock on the pipe.

I'd strongly consider wrapping the entire stone envelope with fabric. It will almost eliminate the chance of silt clogging the line later. It's probably about $0.35/ft in material costs.
not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids
