That dog saved my hide several times over the seven years she worked with me. I tried my best to get the Dept to start a K-9 Unit with at least one K-9 per district. All they could see(as always) was the start up costs, ignoring the fact that she made ten times what she cost per year, including factoring in start up costs. Idjets.

Think about this...in seven years of field work I had NOT ONE SINGLE violator run from me. Not one. Not even those Dunnavant boys. Never.

In seven years I had exactly ONE person raise his voice to me and Taz told him to shut up. He did. Right now.

Troy, I assume she was your personal dog. Was she an official game warden like police dogs are. Had to be great to have a backup and partner to work with.

I went to La and bought her with my money, got her trained in NC and La at my expense and then certified.

Her daddy won the biggest drug dog championship in the nation in El Paso Tx. He beat the Border Patrol and US Customs dogs like a red headed stepchild. Only K-9 certified by the FBI to be used on entry teams. Damn fine dog. And Taz was just as good.

Bhamfred, you get to work with Rayford Hamilton (aka Fuzz). Highly respected GW in NE Alabama, legendary. He was our neighbor for a while. His stepson and I were friends. He was always nice to us kids, however spot lighters were a different story. Sorry did'nt mean to hijack the thread.

Put me and Ginger down for 2012. Just got her today. Seven week old fuzzy 13" Beagle puppy. She's out of field trial stock, or so they elderly gentleman I got her from said. He's got a nice kennel. She's registered but I didn't get the papers. I took a deer tail with me when I picked her out. She's the one that first followed the path where I drug the tail.

Thanks. She sniffed every place my bare foot hit the ground. She also smelled every dead water oak tree close to where we were in the yard, then would track back to them and chew on them. She's got one heck of a nose. Right now she's wrapped up in a blanket sleeping on my sons arm.

OK, I'm curious.

Do you train a deer-tracking dog the same way as bird dogs? Scent trails, put them with experienced dogs, etc?

I saw one in use over in Mississippi several years ago and thought it was one of the best things since sliced bread. Wish I'd had one for a couple of bucks I hit and lost.

Yes, you can. Mine are professionally trained to hunt birds. They know to hunt 'dead' for scent. My female can sniff out a rat in a hayfield. She has a great nose.

I started mine as a puppy letting him chew on deer hangin in the cooler. He figured out what a deer looked and smelled like real early. Then when he got older, I started putting him on deer that I knew were down and let him find them. It's real easy to do if the dog likes doing it.

I have an AKC registered Bloodhound with great bloodlines. I've been training him for quiet a while now and he does very well, I just hope he keeps it up when he gets in the woods. I could service the Colbert, Lauderdale, and Franklin county areas. Would only charge enough to cover my gas.

I have a 3year old yellow lab that has found several deer we could help out in lower coffee county. Just ask to help with gas unless it is a kids deer then no charge. Also if you have doubts dont go walkin all in the woods scattering the blood trail.
