Damn right Perch. I have a cousin that did three tours with Special Forces in Nam, and a best friend that did two tours with Marine Recon in Nam. My Marine buddy is coming to stay for a couple of days starting tomorrow. He's from Mandeville, just north of Perch. Tough little sumbitch too, even if he is older than I am. 
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

My Dad served in Vietnam, doesn't like to talk too much about it. But one thing he remembers was the treatment they received when they came home. Still bothers him today. He's told me stories of the fights over there, and I couldn't imagine how scary that had to be for a 19 yr. old young man.

My friends dad and little league baseball coach was on front lines. Had been having flash backs. Never talked much but to his wife. He killed himself. Was in the truck and had his 2 dogs with him. He shot both them and then himself. His wife said he had spoken about having to shoot 6-7 year old kids, and women, and pregnant women. Said they would jump out with aks and be spraying bullets at you. It was either shoot them or die. Bad situation. Glad my dad was in a tank. But he still won't talk about it.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.

In the spring of 1967 I was driving nails in the family construction business. I walk into the Naval Reserve Center just looking for away to avoid the draft. By late September I was driving nails in Hue City South Vietnam. A very rememberable part of my life.

When I was at Parris Island, our Senior Drill Instructor was a little scrappy guy that looked like Buddy Holly with the black horn rim glasses. At first we thought he was a major league asshole, but once we saw the trophy case in the squad bay we saw that he earned the Silver Star and several other medals for valor in Vietnam. He got the Silver Star for rescuing a bunch of his buddies while under enemy fire and getting them all on the medivac chopper and wouldn't get on himself until everyone else was on. He was a smoker, like so many from those days, but when we went on our 5 mile runs everyday he would actually run around and around the entire platoon the whole time and then chew us out for being a bunch of pussies after the run was over... Later in 3rd phase we realized he was hard on us because he wanted us to live once we graduated and he wasn't there to chew us out. To this day he is the most badass individual I have ever known. Here's to you Gunny Gremillion...

Grew up on active combat bases all during the Vietnam War as an Air Force dependent. In the Philippines, I lived about 1/4 mile from the flightline, so we could stand in the backyard and watch F-105, F-4, and F-5 sorties launching all the time, and see them come back, sometimes shot up pretty bad. Straight across the flightline from our house was the ditching yard...when the aircraft could make it back but wouldn't hold together to land, they'd punch out and ditch the plane there.
When we came back to Texas, I remember going to the airport with my parents to meet one Dad's friends coming in from somewhere...he was a Green Beret and all I ever heard anyone call him was "Wolf", Lord knows how he and my Dad even knew each other...but as he was walking through the terminal towards us, this little hippie chick threw a cup of something, looked like blood, on him, and screamed "Murderer!". Wolf took hold of the front of her shirt and backed her up against the wall, leaned in close and in a very low voice said, "Madam, I am a KILLER, not a murderer." Made a pretty profound impact on her, and me, as well, I suppose...
