I did it for about 2 Years. It only needs tapping every now and then. Then I wore out my pull start assembly and had to replace that. Starter is about 100 bucks, if I remember right.

I've had them rebuilt on trucks and boats and never had a minutes trouble out of them. Usually it's about $35 if I remember right and those are big starters. If you are comfortable doing it you can rebuild a starter for next to nothing. I've even seen a buddy of mine take his apart sand it lightly and blow it off with a compressor and it go back to working

My 06 Rancher ES needs brushes in the starter. It did the same thing that you describe and I pulled the starter off. The area around the brushes was real dirty with carbon worn off the brushes. One brush is wore down pretty short but I didn't have new brushes to put in it. So I cleaned it real good and it cranked like new for a couple of months. Now it's hit and miss but I have a new brush assembly to put in it. Gonna wait till deer season is over and put it in. It's not hard at all if you have some metric tools and a little mechanical know how. Costed about $12 on eBay I believe

I had the same issue and it was there starter. I pilled the starter and broke the cast where the starter bolts on. I now use the pull start. Be careful if you do it yourself.

Saw videos on both and to a trained technician it looks easy to them but possibly doable.

It is not hard to take the starter off and disassemble.
You can get a set of brushes on Ebay for little of nothing. Take the starter apart change the brushes and clean the point where the brushes ride the starter (this area is more than likely going to look burned). Just hit it with some fine grit sand paper.

Thanks for all the advice. Ordered starter from Ebay tonight. should be hear this Thursday or Friday.
Hope pulling the old starter and replacing with the new is as easy as yall say.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

If you hear a thump under the seat it is not a starter, I repeat it is not the starter, more of and issue with the battery for sure, TRY TO JUMP IT.

I had this same thing happen on a Kawasaki Bayou 400 about a month ago.
Load test on the battery: good
Replaced the starter solenoid: did not change one thing
Pulled the starter and the contact point for the brushes was burned black.
Cleaned that up and it has started like a brand new one ever since.
