I understand the rule is that an adult with a license and all paper work must be within 30 feet of a youth during youth season. The question i have is if the youth has successfully passed the hunter education course and shows tremendous responsibility does that rule still apply? If that is the case then the youth would have to hunt with an adult until they are 16 correct?

The way I read them only kids under 16 can hunt with a firearm and they have to be with an adult. Doesn't give any exceptions for hunter's ed.

The way that i interpret the "only youth under 16" is that they have to be under 16 to be considered a youth to participate in the special youth season though. Maybe bhamfred or Matt will help us out with this.

Maybe bhamfred or Matt will help us out with this. That is what I understand. I'm not sure what you are asking or are confused about. To hunt with a gun you must be under 16 and have licensed hunter close by. Sounds pretty clear to me.

Yes an adult has to be within 30 ft. For the youth hunt. I called the dcnr with a few questions and they explained it all.

They must be within 30 feet of the adult supervisor during the youth hunt. Does not matter if they have the hunter education course or not. Now outside of the youth hunt any person under 16 can hunt by themselves with or without the Hunter education course. Once they turn 16 they must pass the Hunter education course to hunt by themselves. If they have not passed Hunter Ed then they have to follow the rules of hunting with supervision. Within 30ft of supervisor, supervisor must be licensed and 21+years old or the parent of youth.

Also just FYI each youth will need their own harvest record for deer or turkey hunting.

What happened to the rule that anyone under 16 had to be accompanied by an adult. I'm not talking about the youth hunt. Maybe that was just for public land. It used to be in the regs., i guess i need to read them again.

Great law got to give it to DCNR on that one!
