1 per 100 is a guide for "average" size property. But I can tell you from experience, throw that out when you get to about 3000 acres. Because at that point, it's just going to get ugly. 4000 sounds like a lot of property, until 40 people actually show up on opening day.

The one thing nobody ever considers is that on a given tract of land, only a small percentage of it is actually "huntable". LIke what turkey247 said above, there aren't 40 spots to have to yourself on 4000 acres.

Simple illustration is this: 3 of us used to lease 650 acres, and even then we'd pressure the snot out of it. Of that 650, I'd guess 75% of that land was short pines or other impenetrable/unseeable/unhuntable type cover. You had to hunt the roadbeds, fields, or few other places open enough to see. By the end of season each year we had ruined that place. One more person would have been impossible. And this was a block of land that was CRAWLING with deer, primo Chambers Co stuff where you'd see 25 does in one set during bow season on good acorn trees.

I just picked up a lease that is 120 acres and it is laid out where 4 could easily hunt the area without interfering with each other, at least deer hunting. Turkey hunting, totally different story. Two of us have the lease and we agreed to let each of our sons hunt the land as well. We all get along real well so we shall see how that goes.

So far, so good. I have been the only one to hunt the area. Oh, and we agreed to bow hunt only.

You could hunt 16 that would be one per ten acres that don't mean you going to shoot more deer. When you shoot them all they gone.

I wouldn't want more than one person on 160 acres. that person being myself

my absolute min is 100 acres per. Prefer 200+ per. More acres less members the better the hunting.

One of the first clubs I was in had 8 members and about 600 acres. I thought at the time that was tight but close to the old 100 acres per adage. But each member could have a guest and or son/daughter/wife at any given time. So the 8 members could be 16 hunters very easily.
Just something to think about when determining proper acerage.

4-6 ? Na...At least 10 to cover that much acreage.
