Quoting this from an LFTT. What would you do in this situation? Is there anything I can do except just watch? I settled in around 2:30 PM about 20 ft up my tree overlooking a food plot. I was facing out over the plot on the edge of a hardwoods pocket at the base of a mountain. The cloud cover was fairly thick and it was getting dark pretty fast. Fog had begun to settle in and I could hear squirrels and turkeys in the area.
About 4:30 PM I hear a crunch probably 15 yards behind me. I froze and waited ... A few seconds later the whole danged woods on either side of me and behind me lit up with deer. They were right on me so I couldn't move. Two fawns came right up to my tree and started sniffing every spot where I'd layed my gear down while setting up. A large doe, obviously their mamma, had stopped about 20 yards to my left, in a thicket area and she was watching me like a hawk. I couldn't move or I'd surely scare them off so I did the only thing I could do ... I sat there and watched these beautiful critters all around me rooting around in the leaves while the mamma stood there diligently watching me intently.
After 5 or 10 minutes I decided that I'd better at least try to get a shot. I started moving very slowly to swing my bow towards that mamma doe. Nope, she immediately started stomping her front left hoof. Within 2 seconds all I could see was white flags running back up the mountain.
I don't want to pass quietly into the night. I want to slide in sideways kickin and screamin

Pick a better tree to start with.
But if its already too late for that, you have two options, if they have you pegged. Stay stock still, and sometimes they will lose interest, or atleast turn and slowly walk away, and you can draw. or you can try to draw and shoot as fast as you can. Sometimes they will freeze just long enough to get an arrow off.

Stay stock still, and sometimes they will lose interest, or at least turn and slowly walk away, and you can draw. This is how I killed a doe that had "pegged" me this season; she came in on a side of the woods where I didn't have much cover (up in the tree); she stared at me & bobbed her head a good 5 minutes, trying her best to get me to move; I stayed stone cold still & just stared at her, while my bow hung next to me... She finally lost interest, backed up a step & started making her way in front of me; soon as she stepped behind a big oak, I grabbed my bow & waited for her to present a clear shot. She eventually did, but it took a while. One thing that really helped my situation was wind; it was in my favor, 'cause while she was bobbing her head, she was sniffing stronger than Richard Pryor on a cocaine line.

I picked that tree because of the wind and the wind was in my favor. I'm sure she couldn't smell me. Now the faws sniffed every single spot I'd set gear down at when I was getting ready to climb and I think that triggered/alerted mamma doe that something was awry

Turn around and face the woods, or get further off the food plot. When I bow hunt a food plot, I either sit right on the plot or 50 to 75 yards off it.
If the deer are walking downhill towards you, you stand a whole lot better chance of getting silhouetted in the tree.

In fact, I carry my bow on my back just like my gun... A mature nanny doe is wise as hell, and when you have multiple sets of eyes & noses on the scene (even fawns), it's very hard to get away with much of anything...

Try sitting off the field some. You make not be able to cover as much of the field but you will get busted less often. If they see you just freeze and wait them out. Hopefully your not in some position where you get a cramp!

Something else you can try is a drop or two of vanilla extract about twenty ft from your stand in the plot. They will make a bee line for it.

And look over there back when looking at them. Don't make eye contact. I'm convinced they will see your eyes moving before seeing your arms move! I try to sit facing away from where I think the deer will come from (unless i can see a good distance). It allows you to mask your movement a little.

How big was the tree you climbed and did it have limbs or vines growing up in it? Bowhunting southern deer, in my opinion, is what being a sniper in Vietnam must of been like. Concealment is almost as important as wind direction. What good is it to beat their nose only to have them see you 12-15 feet up a skinny, tall pine. I'm not saying you climbed a limbless pine, but she did peg you. What to do? You may have to move only 10 feet or 20 yards but move to a tree that offers some background concealment or is wide enough to hide your outline. I've been hunting with trad gear for several years now which limits how high I can climb due to shot angles and accuracy. I climb low so I depend on climbing where I know my outline is broken up. I try to look at a tree from the deer's perspective. I look at my tree from the direction of where I'm guessing it will approach. I even squat down to deer height and look up at my tree. Sometimes what I think is a perfect tree is not because there is not enough foliage above or behind where I would be perched. I hope this helps.

This was an oak tree about 1 ft in diameter and was close to a lot of other oak trees and they all had limbs that helped give me some cover. Now, that said, none of the limbs had very many leaves on them as most had already fallen. It was about 5-6 yards inside the tree line so yeah, I may need to find another ... thinking about the one here labeled "Alternative ..." Here's the setup :

That is one of my big things now, I think they have a sixth sense about that and I'll not stare at one, just put my head down and listen for them to start walking and try and judge their mood my their footsteps. You all may think I'm crazy, but I've had many a deer peg me and not many have ever bolted when I do as I stated above. Quit staring at them.

to see what yall's ideas on what to do in this situation are.
Not much pisses me off more than getting busted by an old doe. I try and wait as long as possible and be as still as possible. If they start acting all crazy, I try and wait for that doe to put her head down or turn and walk off, then I draw and shoot if possible. Killed several this way. Just my $0.02 here's my post from the LFTT thread. If you sit and wait and be still until the right time, it works. At least for me, but hell, I'm a window licker, so what do i know....????
