something needs to be done about coyotes.Thats the bottom line.The only thing good about hogs, is the coyotes will eat the little ones and loose interest on the deer and small animals for a day.
I hunt in ga and ala and I have seen a huge decrease across the board.
Just my opinion. Deer numbers are definitely down in a lot of places all across the southeast, due to predators. Alabama should figure out a way to lead the way to reducing #'s and provide the best place to hunt in the south .. Why have all those Florida hunters headed someplace else when they can come to alabama .

Choccolocco would benefit tremendously from extensive logging. It's hard to hunt deer on thousands of acres of mostly unbroken hardwood ridges. The cuts would provide obvious bedding areas, more food, etc. Besides that one huge cut next to the Hwy 9 check station, there's very little cutover on the entire 58,000 acres. There is one big fresh cut on the 500 road, BUT!!!!...see what I'm about to say below.....

The Pinhoti trail system is intertwined all throughout the mgt area, from top to bottom, and it gets used HEAVILY!!! Just this weekend there was a large trail race event with hundreds of runners. I think that increased human presence hurts a lot of areas we grew up hunting. This past Wednesday I went up there to look at a place, and I saw three guys running on the trail. (This is also WILDLY dangerous if you ask me) That big fresh cut I talked about on the 500 road, the Pinhoti runs right through the middle of it. Last year I hunted off the back side of that cut, 20 degrees and frosty, and two times that morning people ran that trail. They talk loud, etc. Ruined what little confidence I had.
On top of that, for whatever reason(s), there just aren't the deer there that there used to be. It has become hard to even find sign, and traditionally the woods would be destroyed right now with buck sign.
We were on the edge of Eternia, when the power of Greyskull began to take hold.

Me and a buddy hunted over there this morning. I hunted from a tree that has produced several bucks for me over the years, and saw one spike and no other deer. My buddy saw nothing. Hey, that's why it's called hunting instead of killing.

They are going to start thinning timber this feb-mar.I know of at least 2 companies involved.

Prob bad shots. I personally don't think yotes killed 4 grown deer up there. I seen a lot of tracks, wish I could have hunted today.

Wasn't there today but yesterday between 2 hunters, they "said" said they saw 24 deer. Apparently some folks know where they are.

Got wet yesterday and blown around today. But glad to be in the woods. Saw a coyote but it was there and gone before I could get a shot. Saw fresh rubs yesterday. Came up to the 4 way above Pine Glen today and met 7-8 game wardens. They said they only checked one deer today. A 7 point. Met a guy on a motorcycle RIDING THE TRAILS. At least he was wearing a orange vest. I agree with ikillbux about all the human activity on all the horse trails, bike trails, etc. Squirrel hunting one day last month, I watched about a 2 hr, never ending parade of horse riders come down through the hollow. Women laughing, men whooping and yelping it up. Finally I just left. I've always wondered if they have to pay to use the WMAs like hunters do. Who knows...

Nope... and it's a shame. But the way we are funded we can't use the money if we charged auser fee like we can license dollars. User fees are consideref program funds and are allocated differently.

My understanding is that the wording in the particular articles where funding is laid out says "hunting" license. The wording would have to be changed legislatively.
Now, that is my understanding of it.
Horse riders, 4 wheeler riders, bird watchers and such aren't "hunting."

This is the 1st forum I've ever participated in. Once I figure out how to start a thread(in the next few days), I would like to know how other hunters feel about either putting some restrictions on "free use" of the WMAs, or at least make them contribute.
I imagine if hunters were caught making trails like the ones I saw today and tacking up reflective signs up all over the place(driving in this morning, the woods were lit up from my headlights hitting the trail signs), the GW probably wouldn't be so understanding. Maybe they could call it a "Land Impact License" or something. The more impact on the land they make, the more they have to pay. You could drive a Jeep down some of these trails.
Has anyone ever rode up on a bunch of them? I've had them wave their arms telling me to slow down, so as not to upset their horses. A friend and I were in my boat fishing Coleman one day when about a dozen of them came down to the swimming area, then a few rode the horses into the lake and swam across to the other side. I may still have video to prove it.
I love horses and dogs. It's their owners I sometimes have a problem with.

I think the early hunt was a neat idea. Doggone shame weather had to be so bad. Hope they try again next year.

Agree on charging a fee for anybody out there, just $5 a year would generate millions. But, the state would try to get all those revenues put in general fund instead of for wildlife enhancement! Instead of cutting all the timber at one time would be better to cut every five to eight years small plots scattered throughout. And leave some trees to hunt from in clearcut. Maybe a small string of oaks leading to middle of clearcut and some in the middle. I know that is not what loggers want to hear, but would be great for access hunting. If they could lease local agricultural fields and plant summer crops that would help out too.

I did not see a deer yesterday morning. Headed home after the morning hunt. I too enjoyed the early hunt and it is unfortunate the weather did not cooperate. I believe with the terrain and the wind blowing like it did the deer can stay far enough ahead of you even if you are walking miles.
I have hunted this place a good bit in the past few seasons and I have an easier time seeing deer in the early season. Once the rut is over I cannot find a deer at all. With better weather I think a lot of deer could have been killed. My only problem with the hunt is that it is before youth weekend. I would like for the youth to be able to get in the woods before everyone else. Maybe have the youth hunt a weekend sooner and then the special opportunity hunt on the weekend the youth hunt typically happens?
