I don't see how anyone from the state can give an accurate assessment of deer population . This numbers are not even remotely close. .

We don't use the voluntary system to assess anything, other than the fact that less than 10% of people actually volunteer their harvest info.

To show how little hunters are willing to do to answer their own questions.

J/K and y'all really said it first

But you do realize that system was in place for the implementation of the mandatory game check a couple of years ago. We just ask folks to turn in their harvests so we can get a sample.

IMO....The people who don't want to use their harvest record and get a confirmation number for their registered harvest are just plain SKEEEEEEEERED! and they need to take up another sport like golf so they can use a eraser on their score card and write in whatever the number of strokes their ego tells them it takes them to hit that little white ball in the hole.

I love all of Gods creatures, right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

counting ever dead deer is useless if you don't know how many lives ones are left . they tried to pawn this off as a management tool . imo i don't see how .

Maybe yall should add a coyote counter on that list , and let's see how fast they spread year over year . And why is it not mandatory to report harvest records for all deer ?

I record mine and urge others to do so.

How many of the ones complaining do the same?

My goodness, it only takes a couple of minutes, with no time/date restrictions and is FREE. If you have time to make a post on here griping about it......you have time to enter your kill(s). Then, you can either choose to whine/gripe about others not doing so or it being useless...or something. Because, I swear, some folks are just gonna complain!

I think there was a total of 8 deer reported in lee county . I personally know of atleast twice that many. Why not make it mandatory and enforce it , I'm all about preserving the outdoors and teaching respect for the outdoors. And this system is a joke .

Politics. Too many hunters would gripe and most politicians think it would hurt them on election day.

Unless you hunt in a pen you will never know how many deer are left after the season. So with your train of thought everyone has been doing it wrong on all these managed properties that record harvest data.....

I think it is crazy as hell to have to fill out the paper harvest record in the field and it is never sent in to the state, yet you can get a hefty fine for not having it in your procession. A useless piece of paper.

Agree, 100%.

"Why do you ask"?

Too many people spend money they don't have , on things they don't need, to impress people they don't know.

I understand the desire for more data, but I have a philosophical issue with hunters becoming "law breakers" for forgetting to fill out a mandatory form. There are other ways to get this information. When you renew your license each year you could require hunters to fill it out like the migratory bird card. This way you get the info, but you don't bog down our game warden's with trying to enforce game check among there many other duties. Also, some of these guys can get out of the office and get some of this info themselves. Talk to the game wardens in each county, talk to the biologists and county extension agents, talk to the deer processors, etc. It would take minimal effort for the processors to fill out a sheet each day for the number of bucks and does from each county.
It's the state's job to manage the deer herd to be healthy and in acceptable numbers. It's not the hunters responsibility to do there job for them. I'm pretty sure if you asked Matt or any of the biologists in there respective area they could tell you immediately if they needed to cut back on the doe harvest or not. This poor me attitude that we can't do our job because we don't have gamecheck is BS.
