Around my circle of close friends and family I have 18 people that are laid off work right now. All from steel, coal and gas (propane) industries. I'm 37 and have never seen any type crisis like what I'm seeing today. Thousands laid off just around the Birmingham area and that's just what I know about. Who's or what is behind it all. It's easy to say it's all Barry's fault but is? I know China is making cheap steel and Barry hates coal. For you older guys is this something that happens every couple decades or so or is this something much bigger? Being 37 and paying attention to this type stuff for 15yrs or so I can't recall ever seeing this many layoffs at one time. There's a lot more questions here than answers.

Wiley is correct. Also the trade deals our government has negotiated in the past few decades aren't helping. Textiles and some low skill manufacturing jobs left when NAFTA was passed back in the Clinton years. Hard to compete with what equates to slave labor from Asia, when little to no tariffs are placed on the goods.

Yeah when I mentioned Barry I meant him and his EPA. The EPA is about as dangerous government entity we have. They have legal ground to say and do what ever they want regardless of the science or facts behind their decision. They starting shutting the coal business down right after he was reelected. Something crazy. My dad (retired) was an engineer and sold valves, etc to the power companies in the southeast. He still talks to guys in the business and they said that they are all going towards natural gas. 1. Because it burns cleaner. 2. Because its easier to manage. No need to manage a coal yard when your burning . If that's the case then why the layoffs in the propane industry?

The easy answer is NAFTA.
That has been and will continue to be the worst thing for our economy.
Most everything revolves around manufacturing in this country. When big companies have no incentives to stay here, they left quickly. On top of the cheap labor, EPA, etc., there are no unions to deal with in Latin & South America and China.
Clinton created lots of problems during his term that took years for us as a Country to actually notice and other administrations took the blame for it. I see the same sort of problems with what Barry has done.

Thursday was rough day for me. I had to layoff 220 of my co-workers. All victims of the pitifully poor Met Coal market. I'm now in the process of setting up their recall panels and economic, job search assistance. These aren't just people but families. We were on a call Fri and learned that the Chinese have dumped nearly 40% more steel in this country than allowed by trade agreements and continue to do so.

Im seeing a lot of friends layed off as well.
I own a small construction company doing specialty work and the last 7 years has been very challenging to Stat afloat. But here in the last 6 months I have barely been able to keep up with the workload and cannot find decent help! People are either chemically dependant or would rather stay home and be funded by the government for choosing to be lazy!
My very best employee right now is a 26 year old woman who will work circles around most men!
I'd be willing to bet that my average turnover with employees averages 3 weeks.

Scary time in the offshore oil industry right now, too. Thousands laid off, many (including me) placed in unfamiliar positions with pay cuts, and dozens of rigs stacked or idle, with no turnaround on the visible horizon, yet. I'm coming on 18 years out here, and never seen it this bad. I'm proud to still be working, but I sure hope it turns around and picks up soon!

It's within a few miles of where I live and I have 3 friends that were part of that layoff. I know it would be terrible to be in your shoes and I hope you guys are able to pull out of it and call them back to work. Another unanswered question. I'm in the commercial trucking industry. All goods and products sold today were on a truck at some point of it making it on the shelf. We have broken some records this year. In sales and service. Makes little sense that with all these layoffs people would still be buying trucks. To make your point with China selling us all the steel, one of our biggest customers had bought around 100-150 trucks this year. That's just one. We have several other big customers buying trucks as well. One thing they all have in common is that they all, for the most part pull flat bed trailers. What is the bread and butter of those who haul flat bed trailers? Steel! Be it coils, piping, rebar etc. Obviously it's not steel being made by American companies so it has to be coming from elsewhere. Also as far as EPA goes. The EPA is hammering the commercial trucking industry with all their emission requirements. Has been for a decade. 80% of the repairs we make are emissions related and it's costly. It's Pretty much done away with the lone owner/operator because of the costs of maintaining a modern day commercial truck.

I agree..Im in the trucking business and have said for years the EPA is Americas biggest enemy. God bless the folks who lost their jobs. It's never a good time but sucks worse during the holidays

Tough situation to be in for all parties involved. Our company has done a lot of work for y'all in the past. I'm actually at Concord today.

Ross Perot warned us if NAFTA was approved we would hear a giant sucking sound when all of our jobs disappeared to Mexico. Turns out he was right. Can't wait to see what the next trade deal does to us. The easy answer is NAFTA.

I see the same sort of problems with what Barry has done. Clinton doesn't get all the blame for NAFTA, he signed into law what Bush I initiated and tried to push through before his term was up. Just a few years after NAFTA became law almost every "sewing factory" in our area had closed the doors and set up shop south of the border. They didn't close these factories to escape high union wages and benefits either, as most workers made a modest income and were not union members. Just in SE Alabama alone, NAFTA left thousands of people unemployed with a skill set that was pretty much specific to the textile industry. While most of these jobs weren't high paying, they did provide a decent standard of living and health benefits. The standard of living for that socioeconomic group has greatly declined. Ride through most any town and look at the neighborhoods around the big textile mills that are closed. I guess it's just the "price" of progress.

We have been extremely blessed here. Our largest customer got a bee in their bonnet a few years back to have parts (not those we make) made in China. It has cost them dearly in recalls due to the parts being made from junk metal. They had to send teams to Australia, South America and Europe to swap parts out of their assemblies already built up into tractors. They're undertaking a project now to resource all parts made in Asia back in the US. They learned the hard way that the Asian suppliers may or may not meet spec. on raw materials.
Their Asian suppliers also require payment when the material is loaded on the ship. With it taking 6 weeks to transport, they ran into the problem of finding out a shipment was bad and it already being paid for and taking 6 weeks to replace. A lot of companies have learned that the labor and material cost savings is more than offset by the costs of transportation and inventory.

It is tough. I don't for a minute believe the low numbers our govt reports as unemployed. I'm going on 2 1/2 months myself. It's hard but we're getting through this. The main obstacle I have is my age (54). No one will admit it, but a lot of companies are hesitant to hire us old folks. I've been told way too many times, that I'm over-qualified so they can't hire me, even when it's a big cut in pay. Really?
