I'm looking to get a newer vehicle for my wife here soon. We are really interested in full size GM SUVs such as the tahoe, yukon, etc. The 5.3 is the most common engine found in these but I know they have oil burning issues which really scares me. Did the oil burning issue start in 2007? How long before the 5.3 was fixed? I am not worried about adding a little oil here and there. My concern is the previous owner running it dry and buying a ticking time bomb. Anything else I should watch out for?

how is the 6.2L ? I know i will sacrifice MPG but is it a 200K engine?

It was a problem with a valve cover design. I can't remember what year they fixed it, but it is supposedly fixed. There have been a number of threads about it here in the past, try searching as I recall there being some good info. The 6.2 sucks fuel, but I believe it is a great motor.

Got an 08 crew cab with the 5.3. Starting burning oil around 45k mi. Gm replaced all 8 pistons and rings along with the valve cover and baffle in the oil pan at 65k mi. Been good ever since and got 88k on it now

I'm on my 3rd 5.3L chevy. Had a 2003 sierra, 2009 Silverado and now a 2013 Silverado. I always changed the 2009 every 3,000 miles and it was never really low. I let it go to 5k ONE DAMN TIME and my oil light came on. I stopped, added oil and proceeded to keep it changed every 3,000 from then on and it was never more than 1 quart (typically much less than that) low. You can always have the AFM tuned off to help as well.

I've got a 2005 crew cab Z71 sitting in the driveway that came unwound at 405,000 hard miles. Never had a issue out of it other than a heater core one time. New GM crate engine and gonna try to get another 400+ outta her. She got "chipped" at about 200,000 also.

I've got a 2000 Z71 with 523,000 miles and still going. Stay away from the 2007 and 2008 models as they gave a lot of trouble.

I drive a 2010 Sierra with a 5.3. Just rolled over to 160000 yesterday. It doesn't burn oil.

I bought my 05 GMC Z71 5.3 new. It has 217,000 miles on it and I use it as my hunting truck. I have replaced the starter and alternator.
I have a 2015 for a daily driver.

I think the new vehicles are fine.

I have 2007 GMC Sierra Crew Cab with that dang 5.3. Love the truck, but I'm using 3-4 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles. Had it at the GMC place when it started consuming oil around 50,000 miles. I've got 140,000 on it now. They tried a few things in 2010 to fix it but it never helped. GM would not do a recall so I've been adding oil.

HAS GM DONE A RECALL NOW AND ARE FIXING THE PROBLEM? I'VE NEVER GOTTEN A NOTICE.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm going to try to find something with the 4.8 or 6.2.

I have a 2011 Silverado with the 5.3...plenty of power and it doesn't use any oil..54k miles and I change it about every 5-6k miles...Had a 2001 with the 4.8 and about 320k miles and it never used oil just was not strong enough to pull the boat to tournaments.

I think the years with the oil problems were only 07-09. Before 07, they had no problems and then they corrected it in 2010.

I'd go with the 6.2 and just buy the extra gas. The 4.8 don't have enough power to pull a fat woman out of a doughnut shop.

No recall. Replace valve cover with the new style. They relocated pcv valve. That is the issue.
