I took in this lil buck couple of three days ago, from Tuscaloosa County. Three pounds even. Found after bushog ran over it, no cuts, guess he ducked!!!!! I've fought him for two days over sucking a bottle, finally started yesterday...3 ounces.



Before some idiot says something, I'm a permitted rehabber, been one for near 30 years now.

I'm gonna rant a little, bear with me.....I took in a doe fawn couple of weeks ago, folks meant well but had no clue. They kept it for three days with almost no fluid intake It crashed an hour after I got it...I fought like hell to keep her alive for nine days till she just quit and died....never had a chance.

DO NOT PICK UP ANY FAWN YOU FIND, unless it;s covered with ants, the mother is near and DEAD, or dogs or others have injured it. Get it to a rehabber the SAME DAY. If I get in a healthy, same day/next day fawn I can just about raise and release it. You keep it for a week..it will probably die.....

I've gotten fawns that folks fed Coco Puffs and Orange soda to for a week....dead fawn walking. Never feed em any food. Milk replacer is ok, red cap store milk is good. Rant over, proceed as normal.

Well put. It's hard to save a little guy that has been retained by folks with good intent. They just don't understand their needs.

Three pounders are tiny!

I usually see them while bush hogging. They walk out of the weeds as I go by but on the next round they are most times laying down just in the tall weeds only to be run over.

When they come out I try to catch them and move them to another part of the field but when the yotes are standing around licking their chops, its no use. Sometimes mama will hang around, sometimes she won't.

Nothing makes me sicker than hitting a fawn with a hay cutter or bush hog, except maybe running a nesting hen, eggs and all, through the crimper.

Glad you got the fawn started taking in fluids Troy. Im sure you can get it healthy and back where it belongs.

Shuter, ya ever try an extension bar with chains hanging/dragging the ground out front to make those fawns get up???? Seen it work in Greene Co on CRP fields.

Guess that doe was hot on or around Christmas. That's a good bit earlier than ours breed.

Never thought about going to that much trouble though. I guess if deer were scarce I might try it.

If those deer belong to the citizens of Alabama, you reckon they would help me make a rig like that?

I get a couple of fawns every year in early/mid june....usually from McCalla/Morgan Rd area....

Im going to steal that pic and post it as a lifesize mount over on taxinet asking for a critique. There are several over there who will tell me my eye shape is off, my earbutts are too low and my inside ear color is wrong.

Man that's cool! I would love to have the space to raise a few wt's for live reference. Kudos to ya Troy for spending the time and money to take in those critters.!!! Me and the wife are considering getting a 10th gen. captive born bobcat kitten from a lady in Iowa.

Troy would it be possible for you to get some pictures or a drawing of what you are talking about? I'd like to try something like that on our hay mower. I can't visualize how it would be attached to the canopy support though. I haven't cut a fawn yet, but I'm sure I will at some point and time. I have had them bolt out from the front of the mower when they were a little older than the one you have pictured.

if you have a bucket on your tractor you can make a "C" shaped bar thewidth of the bucket weld a 1 inch nut to top side of the "c" run 1 inch all thread through nut to tighten down on lip of bucket then weld one end of 36" chains to it about 12" apart let them dangel as you mow and the fawns will move most people hit fawns cause the mow to fast

Have you had any luck with wood duck ducklings, we tried everything to no avail.

Thanks. I got to thinking about it while I was out piddling around the farm this afternoon. We don't bush hog much at all, and what little we do is done before fawning season. The hay mower which does real nasty things to animals it hits, sticks out to the side of the tractor, and I think I decided on what I would build. I've got a stick of 2" square tubing, and I'm going to weld brackets to it so it will fit on the hay spear and stick out to the right side of the tractor the same length that the mower sticks out to the side and weld log chains to it. Does it need to be log chain sized chain?

I'd guess it needs to be heavy chain, maybe not as large as logging chain though. Spacing about every six inches ought to work.

I helped raise a fawn when I was just 6 years old. My dad found it in a soybean field and mom was dead on the road next to it. we talked to a vet he told us what to do and we did it. built it a pen and kept her for 4 years till she died. I think she ate some poison bushes that go thrown in her pen. she was so tame that when my mom went on her afternoon walks the deer and our black lab would go with her. Her name was of course Bambi, I have an oil painting my family had painted of me at 6 years old in the woods bottle feeding her. I was young but it was a cool thing to see and be a part of, that pic brings back a bunch of memories.

A friend's mother used to rehab sparrow hawks and other small birds of prey, we used to feed em crickets as they became used to being outdoors again, then one day they would leave.
