Last weekend my wife attended my kids ball game, its a 4hr drive one way...anyway game ended and we left headed home. It was probably 2130 and we stopped at a Rest Area to utilize the facilities...
My wife has zero situational awareness skills and doesnt understand that I purposefully keep an overwatch on her from about 10ft or so away in certain situations...like when she went over to the vending machines that night and wasn't watching who was around...now this is not far from Memphis...and at night.
I had large man in a unnecessarily heavy coat walk up behind me, he had driven up in an obvious rental car...So I had seen him already. He came up behind me and was almost within my within my comfort zone (which she didn't even notice him)...as he approached I turned sideways so my left side was at him backed up 3 ft and stuck my hand in my right jacket pocket...
He even looked at my hand in my pocket but I had left my FN in the truck...but he didn't know what I had in my pocket. I looked him in the eye...he took a step back and said he was just seeing if they had a coffee vending machine...I never looked at machines but I said I didn't see one...and he walked off, lit a Kool and got on the phone...
Was he 'casing' the situation? Me having that distance meant he couldn't control both of us at the same time easily...Hate to think Im just being paranoid...but...my gut told me he was...
I'm not sure what his intentions were...but I will tell you, from now on, especially at night, in that type situation...I will have a firearm with me...
What bothers me is my wife didn't even notice...She wont ever be traveling alone up there anymore at night.

Gotta always be on your guard these days. I would've been highly suspicious myself just of the "unnecessarily heavy coat" this time of the year. Glad the situation went away and didn't escalate.

I think you can never be situational aware enough. In today's crazy times you just never know. For him to respond by mentioning coffee,he knew you were pulling overwatch and in my opinion might've stopped his chance opportunity. I've been in a few hairy situations and by the good Lord's will nothing came of them and then there's been a handful of times that i just completely misread the situation. But that doesn't mean I'm going to change my way of reading certain situations cause the day you do,might be the day that you shouldn't have. Good looking out.

I don't think that's paranoid.. I'd consider that being smart. Being in a large metro area, and working in a shady area have increased my situational awareness 10 fold from when I lived in AL. There are some bad folks in this world and many of those behave and act in a predatory manner. If you make it clear you won't be an easy target, they typically will back down. Hard to predict what a truly crazy person will do but normally if someone gives you bad vibes, it's best to trust your gut.
While I don't concealed carry (the process to get a permit is costly and time consuming for the county I live in) I do make sure to keep a knife on me at all times. Though its not optimal, it is something if it's ever needed..

Definetly not paranoid and I am the same way with my wife. She doesn't pay attention at all and is very unaware of her surroundings . I carry all day every day with different weapons, depending on my clothing situation. Stay vigalant and keep your family safe at all cost.

I believe you were spot on in your assesment. That very situation is one reason I carry the sidearm that I do. The hammerless S&W 642 doesn't even have to come out of a coat pocket to start pumping rounds like a semiauto would. No hammer to grab material in the pocket and no slide to pinch material and jam.

Doesn't matter what his intentions were. You were there, you exercised situational awareness...picked him up on radar and began to arrange yourself to your benefit, and at the end of the day, you and your wife made it home safe and sound. Maybe he was up to no good, maybe he was just wondering if there was a coffee machine...doesn't matter, you had your eye on it, that's what overwatch does! One of the best lines I ever heard in a movie...I've used the line a million times teaching my kids all sorts of things in life... "Chance favors the prepared mind."

There are two books that I recommend everyone read. THE GIFT OF FEAR, by Gavin de Becker and Deep Survival: Who lives, Who Dies, and Why ,by Laurence Gonzales.
I especially recommend The Gift of Fear, for daughters,wives and girlfriends.
These books explain why that "gut feeling", is trying to tell you something.

Beat me to it. Great little book that everyone should read. In a nutshell it says we all "see" things that tell us something is wrong even if we don't cognitively realize what we saw. So basically it tells you to trust your instincts and does an interesting job of explaining why.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Trusting your gut will keep you alive. Yeah, you made the right choice to speak first and set the tone for whatever came next. Only mistake you made was leaving your sidearm in the truck. Like you said, bet that never happens again.

I just don't think women are wired that way. Maybe it's the Mars - Venus thing, but my wife is the same way. I notice all kinds of things about people that she never notices, but if a chick has the wrong shoes, shirt, skirt or pants on she sure as hell notices that. :-) "I can't believe she looked in the mirror this morning and said 'This is the look I'm going for today.'"
