Not to hijack this thread; I have 2 pittbulls and some little white dog that run together and have been showing up on our property for the last 2 yrs, looked up one day coming back from tree stand to see 1 of the pits trailing me, he took off before I could even get my handgun up.

Free-ranging and feral dogs are a true menace!
I have dealt with them most of my life as I live in a rural area. Some people just think that they can let them roam and ramble as they want.
My dogs are kenneled in nice kennels and the one that is not is in a chain link fence in our front yard. NOT roaming around loose.

But, keep this in mind when you see a random dog......

Thats a good link. New laws have been pasted. IF YOU kill dogs do it with caution. Now the dogs , im describing could NO WAY be mistaken for hunting dogs AND dont have tracking collars. How did the guy in the article get caught???? Running his mouth or bragging about killing hunting dogs?? Was disposing of tracking collar?? Next question. If you blow a tracking collar to peices with a 300 Weatherby or beat it flat with a hammer will it still work?????

No.
But, the GPS will real-time track right to you doing it.
The same way this guy got CAUGHT......nothing to do with running his mouth.

I don't view all dogs the same. In my experience, feral / stray dogs can be more dangerous than coyotes. They have the same pack hunting instincts, but with a reduced fear of humans. I'm not talking about someone's pet or hunting dog that gets across the fence line, but what are essentially wild dogs.

I have had 2 bad experiences with them, once hunting in Wilcox Cnty when I was about 13, and once about 5 years ago cruising timber outside of Ragland. In both cases, there were multiple dogs, working in coordination to move toward//around me. (At 13 they seemed like wolves).

I get the frustration that your investment of countless hours and dollars into private property can be affectively "stolen" because others are too inconsiderate to keep their dogs off your property(especially if you have an ileet sanctuary), but I would have a hard time shooting a dog with a collar, or one that was clearly a pet.

I think a better answer would be to have real penalties against the dog's owner. I don't see the difference in someone shooting a deer over their property line, and allowing/sending dogs across the property line to run deer back to them. Both are a trespass, and I think more serious consequences would avoid a lot of the problems.

A few years ago there was a pack of about 9 dogs that were staying on my property. We started getting rid of them any way we could, and it took about 4 months to get the last one of them. That year we had zero fawns that survived that we saw on that property.

There are legal ramifications if you shoot a dog. Shooting one will cause problems with neighbors. As a landowner, club loses lease if I find out about it. Wild dogs are an entirely different matter but shooting pets, hunting dogs is a public relations disaster for the individual, club and the hunting community in general.

Much simpler to talk with the dog owners & resolve the matter peaceably.

If it doesn't have a collar and I see him again after I give him a pass the first time, he's getting shot in the face

I had a bad problem with it a few years ago.

I never saw one in person, so never had to make the decision, but they were constantly on cameras on every corner of the property.

When you turn around to find a pitbull trailing you out to your stand and the nearest neighbor is over a mile away, talking with the owner (if they even are the owner) is not an option.

Like I have said before. Its real easy for SOMEONE ELSE to sit back and say = O Just go find the owners and talk to them. When the owners my be miles away AND you have no way of knowing who's dogs they are. Most club members that are driving 20 miles plus ARE NOT going to take the time, and go look for a owner. If you choose to kill the dogs, then do it and keep quiet. As far as = legal ramifications. If you are on a 1500 acre lease with 15 people HOW IN THE WORLD are they going to know who killed the dogs???? The county aint going to guestion 15 different people AND take up 15 peoples guns and go all CSI on them anway!!!!!! I say = just kill the dogs and keep your mouth shut!!! thumbup

Do you also advocate Night Hunting and Trespassing/Poaching?
They are no more illegal than what you are describing.

Or, do you have Situational Ethics that simply meet YOUR desires at any given time??

Y'all can make your own decisions. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to deduce why dogs disappear during deer season.

This is about the most ignorant dumb ass thread, I have seen in a while. If you have a dog problem the Internet isn't the place to discuss it. Whatever you do, just keep your mouth shut. It's not that complicated. Threads like this really piss me off. If your not smart enough to make a grown ass man decision, then keep your butt out of the woods. One of these days, someone will get thier guts blown out, bragging about killing a mans hunting dog. Dam the world is going ignorant.

And shooters, if people take your advise, that's a good way to get a club burned to the ground. Breaking them high dollar collars will piss a fella off. Roman candles go along was in the dead of winter.

First off I was only curious about dog collars because I know nothing about them. Second I dont know how this turned to hunting dogs. The dogs were speaking of are Dumped Dogs, on the end off a dead end road. AND if people are DUMB enough to get caught thats on them . My advice was to NOT GET CAUGHT! Regardless, I dont care who shoots dogs and who doesnt. Its a personal choice. IF someone is stupid enough to try to kill a Human over a dog well, then better hope that human isnt quicker on the draw or better trained. thumbup
