Thanks to alabama and surrounding states rules regarding hog hunting on most public land that I can find. It seems as if I'll be using a 22 lr or 22 wmr rifle for hog hunting. OK I will admit I am a little leary of using a 22 lr or even 22 wmr to bring down a potentially very grumpy foe. I've studied proper shot placentment and seems that aiming for just behind or in the ear is best choice. Yet I'd like to hear the opinion of experienced public land hog hunters that have used 22 lr or 22 wmr to bring down hogs. I'd appreciate any input. Do you prefer 22 lr or 22 wmr? Favorite bullet? Favorite shot placement? Preferred engagement distance?

A 22wmr is about all I ever use. I do pick my shots. But, have killed many with less than ideal shots as a group dispersed or a big boar busted out of a bay.
I prefer a JSP bullet. But, have had decent success with a JHP bullet, also. Look for speeds above 1800 as a minimum and bullet weights 40 gr and up.
The JSP is perfect for straight on head shots. It gives you good penetration with some expansion. It also works well for penetrating their tough hides in case of an 'uh-oh'. 25 yds and less, the JHP bullets will work fine. However, that is pretty close and closes the window for follow up shots as they exit the area.
Good Luck!

CCI Gamepoint JSP in 22WMR is what I have been told to use over and over again. Also, there is nothing that says you cant carry a very large caliber hand gun for "protection" should that "uh-oh" moment happen. Just don't scope it and you should be fine.

Get the most powerful 22 LR solid point bullet you can get, aim for the earhole or right between the eyes and Pray for Luck! Stupid Rule! But, that is the best advice I have considering the Law.

To cover all bases. Let's say 22 lr is all I have. Than what? Ive shot the 60-80lb ones behind the shoulder and had pass thrus. Shooting a cz 452 with wolf match or cci greentag. Killed 7 last year with it. If you are talking about corps land no .22mag either

Semiauto is great for follow up shots if you have a choice.

Delta is part corps land?

If you look really close that's an exit hole behind the shoulder of the bottom one

Follow Hogwild's advice on shot placement.

It is indeed an incredibly dumb rule. If hogs are such a problem, why not make it as easy as possible for hunters to kill them?

Is that rule about using a caliber appropriate to what is in season limited to management area's or does that include national forest?
