Also, they ain't rutting on Lowndes but on 2 of those special opportunity dates... Actually... you got me! I thought BW and Choccolocco were the only two having them. I'll try and find out. Please do! You can pm me if you want cuz I'm curious because it makes no since at all to me the way the dates are laid out. Got the answer from the boss this am. They are special opportunity because they take place during the 10 days in Dec. regular gun season will be closed. Barbour is having one too if I understood correctly. Yup, thanks for clarification. I asked AWFF on Facebook and got the answer the other day, forgot to post back here.
There is 2 different high fence. 1 small and one big! Mine was free range in the big pen and was not a breeder buck. Why does it have to be twisted around??

Do the deer at Barbour and Lowndes rut "early" and those WMA's just have the misfortune of being in the south zone or was the "increasing opportunity" logic only applicable to the Choccolocco and Black Warrior hunts?
How long do you think it will take before we get a 3rd zone so folks in those early November rut areas get to gun hunt the rut. It appears that the data is their to support a season shift.
Lowndes rut kicks in after first week of January typically but I've seen rutting activity well into Febuary.

I have been on Choc. almost every hunt for the past several years and it is usually a ghost town. Nothing like the 80's and early 90's. Had a warden there last year tell me that they were considering turning it into National Forest because of the lack of hunter interest compared to the money spent to staff the hunts and manage the land.
I don't know if he was shooting me a line or what but I can tell you that you can drive through the whole place on a hunt and not see 20 trucks on average.
They have been lots better the past couple of years about
opening gates but there are still a few that would be very nice to see open.

IMO if you were going to have a gun hunt that weekend it should have been a youth hunt only! no need for a trophy hunt at BW!!

We had and still have youth hunts on many WMA's and they are some of the lowest participation hunts we have. Folks just don't take advantage of them these days.

We had and still have youth hunts on many WMA's and they are some of the lowest participation hunts we have. Folks just don't take advantage of them these days. I would love to be able to take my son on the youth hunt... But from things I have seen and heard of at Lowndes Im just not comfortable taking my son there.

Didn't realize this hunt was just a week away until a friend reminded me today. Anyone have a half educated guess on how many people may be there. I going to say 800 to 1000 a day.

Point me in the direction of this magical public land that nobody hunts. Everywhere I go, its always covered up with every "expert" deer stalker with a crossbow walking around talking to their buddy in the woods. Special opportunity hunt (AKA)- Early gun hunt to get folks in the woods on these areas when deer are hopefully beginning to rut. These hunts are prior to regular gun season. We are trying some new things and hopefully will increase man days on the WMA system and get folks interested in public lands again.
Believe it or not we do listen when people make suggestions that we can back up with data. Win win...

We had and still have youth hunts on many WMA's and they are some of the lowest participation hunts we have. Folks just don't take advantage of them these days. Part of this is a public perception - right or wrong - that: (1) there are no game animals worth pursuing on the "poorly managed" WMAs (2) there will be too many people or a hassle to get there early, get in line, get a tag-permit-permission, find a spot, etc. (3) that WMAs are unsafe and you'll be shot at or have someone zero on you walking in and out

I've never hunted BW but I plan on being there for the Nov 13 and 14th hunt. Hunting different WMAs is a blast you just have to have the proper expectatios. I've hunted Lowndes, blue springs, coosa, hollins, autauga, and cahaba WMAs and have never had a bad experience.
