This thing was like 2" across with the abdomen about the size of a grape. Never see one like it before. It was in the front yard, kids loved it.

Garden spider. They are cool until you walk through their web before daylight and that big a$$ spider runs down the back of your neck and into your shirt.

Catch a cricket or grasshopper and throw it in the web and watch how fast it disappears! We used to feed the garden spiders a lot when we were kids.

Those things are harmless. Seen them since I was a kid.

Now those orange banana spiders are something else. I was working on a tract of land a few years back in Louisiana and those jokers were everywhere. Landowner said they came off the banana boats in the ports down there.

Those things are why I have a piece of pvc pipe mounted on the front rack of my atv during bow season.

Harmless my A$$. I was riding my ATV a few years back and had forgot to put up my spider sticker and one of those things literally went right in my mouth. I ran off the logging road and hit a tree and just about choked to death on that bastage.

Negative.

They are both in the Orb family, but are in fact different species.

Thanks, Huntinman. I actually did a little research last night after posting. I think I've been calling Garden Spiders Banana Spiders for a long time. I guess I'm never too old to learn something.
