That's kind of crazy because they are a re-seller and their service is on running on the network owned by the ATT, Verizon, etc. I maintain the fiber and copper circuits that feed the cell towers and I can assure you there is no such thing as a ST tower in any of the areas I serve. As far as I'm aware they are purely a re-seller which means they don't own their own network.
Most likely the problem with reception has more to do with buying one of their cheap phones. If you have the same phone there will be no difference from Verizon to ST or ATT to ST as far as the coverage and strength of signal goes.
Pretty sure my straight talk phone worked off the sprint network. It was on of those deals it worked great for the 1st year than got worse and worse. Wouldn't work at all at the hunting club. for the same price i was paying i went to verizon pre-pay and it has been much better for me.

In the end, ST and Verizon probably come out about the same. The big difference is NO CONTRACT! With ST you have the option of changing up or just leaving when something new/better comes a long or if you get pissed off at the company for whatever reason.
I have a feeling that before Obama leaves office he is going to change the rules on how cell companies can operate cause there ain't a communication business he doesn't want his hands in.

I have a feeling that before Obama leaves office he is going to change the rules on how cell companies can operate cause there ain't a communication business he doesn't want his hands in. In this case, what do people then do with their pricey phones they have paid for?

I think you are pretty close on the numbers and if you stretch it out to a 2 year contract then straight talk will save you a little. Straight talk is great if you can get by with a cheap phone, otherwise you are not much different depending on the life of the phone. somebody check my math here.
STRAIGHT TALK PLAN
family of 3 with 3 smart phones.
a phone will normally last me about a year and a half.
smart phone $600 each x 3 =$1,800
per phone per month $50 x 3 = $150
18 months @ $150 per month = $2,700
3 phones for 18 months = $1,800 + $2,700 = $4,500

VERIZON CONTRACT
I currently pay $230 per month for 3 smart phones and 1 dumb phone. $230 x 18 months = $4,140 + phone cost.
yesterday I got a new I-phone 6 and bought my mom a new I-phone 6+. we each got a new case and I got a lightining charger. my total out of pocket was $94.
how is straight talk cheaper? what am I missing?

I previously had Verizon (+15 yrs). My monthly bill was Right around $90 for unlimited Text and Data with somewhere around 450 minutes Talk + the free time. About 6 months ago I switched to Straight Talk, my coverage has not changed at all. I now pay $45 a month for unlimited Talk, Text and Data, the data does slow below 3G, after so much usage, but I have never noticed it if I have hit it. I am well pleased!!!
I used my Verizon Phone (iPhone4) to transfer to Straight Talk on there BYOP plan.

I had straight talk for about 3 years and it was ok but service was never that great, it also seemed to drop calls alot.
I have had best luck with Verizon service and if you go to Wal-Mart you can get a verison pre-pay no contract plan. I bought the nicest smart phone they had for about $175 and the unlimited plan is $60 a month. You also get the 4G with it. Take your Phone from Verizon to Straight Talk and eliminate the Cost of a New Phone and only Pay $45 a month.
For someone like me who has had my iPhone 4 for 5 years, still in pristine condition, using Griffin "Survivor" case:
answer to your math:
ST
$45x3 = $135 (x18) = $2430 (+$1800) = $4230 Phone price included
VERIZON
$230 (x18) = $4140 (+$94) = $4234 Phone Price included as well
You save $4 by switching, and you can PRE pay for 3 monrths or More and add additional $$$ to your savings. I buy the 3 month and pay $130 saving an additional $5...

If you choose ST that runs on Verizon, you do not have access to their 4g lte network. As far as cost goes, the last few years I have gotten a new phone on black Friday for 50 bucks or less. So instead of my phone cost being $600, it's more like $50 a year. Most folks that are going to straight talk to save money are not buying $600 phones, I would guess. Based on your analysis, worst case scenario it is a wash as far as cost goes. My annual cost is 495 + tax + 50 for a phone. Both phones I have bought were about 200 on sale for 50. Total annual cost of less than $600

Huge market all over the web for reselling phones so if it's a decent smartphone line, you can get rid of it (for a loss of course if you bought new). Common misconception is that folks on contract get "free/cheap phones" but that's not true because their plans are higher monthly rates so they are paying it off over 2yrs. In reality, if a person always wants the latest and greatest gadget, they MIGHT be better off on contract. I just can't stomach it as I'm always at LEAST 3-4 yrs behind on technology... frees up all the money we would have wasted on depreciation of tvs, furniture, phones, vehicles, etc. and put into our house, savings, or my hobby tools that help generate secondary income. With American's being the "best consumers" (what a shame we share that title) in the world, I don't find many folks that agree with my overall line of thinking.... where's a emoticon stepping off a soap box I can insert here?

One other advantage of ST over contract plans is if you move. If ATT works great in one place but then you move to another place with crappy ATT service, then you are out of luck until your contract expires.
ST seems to work fine everywhere. When I was on a cruise, my phone lit up like a circus when the boat passed by Cuba and in Grand Cayman, not many other folks had service.

I can partly agree that you can sell the phone if you decide not to continue with st. But let's face it, these phones are not designed to last for years. As for people thinking the phones are free, I sure hope nobody is that dumb. Cell phone companies are shitting in tall cotton for a reason. I personally don't have a dog in the fight. I would love to save money every month on any bill I have but I just don't see any savings with st. As far as being concerned with a 2 year contract with moving out of a particular carriers prime calling area, that's a reach in my opinion. People sign up every day for a 30 year contract when buying a house.

It does give you the flexibility to change your phone by logging onto your account. So you can swap back and forth from at&t to Verizon if you have phones for each.
