I have a 13' Gheenoe boat w/a 6hp yamaha 4st. and like to go places way back away from it all.

We don't have any places like that around here [florida] -some good rivers but there is a boat dock every mile or so =lots of traffic.
And there are dirt roads to the river everywhere you go -I have yet to find a spot where you can't hear people or traffic if you stay long enough.

you can definitely go back in time in the Mobile Delta.

You can find lots of to get lost in the Apalachicola river swamp.

You don't want to go "way back away from it all" in the Mobile River delta if you're not familiar with it. You can get lost easily back in the small creeks and run-offs.

MWE Google Larkins fish camp in Liberty county. Look at the map it is on the back side of dead lakes. You could spend the rest of your life poking around and never see it all. There is also a public launch on the Florida river about 20 miles south of Bristol. Tates hell is not far also. I have hunted it for years and it is easy to get turned around because of all the oxbows and slews. This is all in Fla. and not too far from you.

I didn't mean to sound like I've been all over florida only as far east as the choctawhatchee river north of panama city beach.
I have did some looking on google earth over towards apalachicola river and on east of there -I can't believe how desolate it is.
Sometimes on google earth I can see little tributaries -creeks and sloughs but when you go there by boat they are grown up so thick you couldn't tow a boat up it.
Someone told to give a look over towards liberty county before -I'll check into that area some more.

I have went north on i-65 and slowed down and looked at the mobile/tensaw delta -couldn't see anything but river/swamp and jungle for as far as I could see. I want to take my boat on some trips and hunt some of these places in the winter.
I have light weight backing gear from when I lived in Idaho I like to hunt and camp out of my little boat.

I would think the Upper Delta management area would be better for camping options, but a LOT would depend on the river stage at Claiborne on the Alabama. If over 20-25, would be more water moving down than you would want in your rig. Find Bear Creek, south of the cutoff and on the east side of the river.

Rice Creek Landing in Stockton would be perfect for what you've described. It's off of CR 21 just past the Stage Coach Cafe. This is where the Bartram Trail launch point is and there are a ton of small sloughs and creeks just the right size for a Gheenoe.

As blade said you can really go back in time. Most of the area looks just like it did 200 years ago and there are plenty of huge cypress trees that probably haven't changed much since the Indians paddled by them.

Edit - TAKE A GPS AND TRACK YOUR PATH. Cell service is very spotty and as others have said it's very easy to get lost. You would be smart to take a thermocell with extra cartridges and a small prep bag with gear to stay overnight...even if you don't expect to.

Some of ya'll that are more locally informed about the Claiborne area south. I see on most old maps instead of the Alabama River being called the Alabama River that it is called Majors Creek all the way to the Mobile river. Where did that name come from?

I've never seen that, but I guess I haven't looked at the right map. Very familiar with majors creek though and it intersects into a huge oxbow that used to be the Alabama River just below Boat Yard.

That's just stupid. They have several creeks in the area as well as the Alabama River named Majors Creek...except the right one.

What about leaving a truck there for a few days -would it be safe ?

And 10-4 on the GPS -I always take a little garmin with me and will have camping gear.

I've never heard of any issues there, but I guess there's always a risk. There are several fish camps next to the launch area that are mostly used by older folks. This helps keep some of the trash out.

Just FYI - Burns Lake Launch on the lower delta is one where you don't want to leave your stuff overnight.

is that byrnes off of 225? (friday the 13th - Jason's Lake). don't let your dog swim there either.

Yep...Majors Creek feeds into the river at the bottom of the old horseshoe created by the new river cutoff. It crosses Hwy 59 between Latham and Tensaw. The main channel up that way is the Alabama River, plain and simple. Not sure why maps have everything labeled as Majors Creek.

Had possibly the most fun I've ever had fishing in my life back when I was a teenager right across the river from the mouth of Majors while mullet fishing. Dad and I filled two 48 quart ice chests in less than two hours after a thunderstorm we rode out in the old camphouse that used to be (I assume it's gone now) there where Majors feeds into the river. The mullet were hitting so good we didn't even have to put bait on the hooks.

I second, third and fourth what others have said. Upper Delta will get you all the backcountry you want, and then some.

Yes that is the Byrnes Lake being discussed. I have known people to have the wheels missing off their boat trailers when they pull back up to the launch at Byrnes Lake. I will never launch my boat there.

What about the wacissa and wakulla rivers?
