To bad people can't get this fired up about the whole school system. The majority of teachers don't get paid for what they are worth. Especially good teachers, and the way kids are these days. Look at what the agriculture program does for kids, throughout thier whole life. I know, it done 10 times more for me, thank sports ever did or would.

Sports are important part of teamwork imo but that's it. All my friends that I played high school ball with hurt like hell when they get up in the morning or barometer is falling because of football. I know men that would rather send their child to a school with a great sports program and mediocre academic program than vice versa. I am way in the minority amongst my peers on watching college or nfl also. I will do it just to socialize but would much rather be fishing or hunting or something I can actually participate in.

Sounds like they are trying to squeeze the coaches out to make room for new ones, at least thats been the talk around the county for quite some time. My problem is if the board isn't happy with the coaching staff, why not just fire them & hire new ones? Why beat around the bush?

How do some high school coaches make 100k a year in Alabama and some make $0? Mismanagement of funds or budget?

Bigger tax revenues and big booster clubs that make it a priority. It's getting to be where each sport has its own booster club now. Hoover, Spain Park, Vestavia, Oak Mt., Mt Brook, can all pretty much pay whatever it takes to get a coach. Base salary will be in the 30K to 50K range, then add the coaching stipend and then the Booster contributions, if they teach classes also. Several head football coaches don't have teaching responsibilities and they still make more than if they did teach. All funds go through the school for accounting. Coaches must have their teaching certificate up to date to remain employed.

Yeap. A few want him gone so that's why they did it. That's the rumor anyway. It's complete bs. I believe it will get worked out, but you can bet I won't vote for any of those board members other than Mr. Jones from Ranburne. He made the motion and no one second it so it died. If they don't get it worked out there's going to be some fired up folks. I'll be one of them.

I'm Already fired up, my wife took our oldest son to summer football workouts last night while my youngest and I were feeding animals and were back in about 45 min. Went down to the house and was informed that everything had been cancelled until a decision could be made. I called our "district board member" and didnt get an answer. Supposedly the baseball team got to practice before the football team yesterday?? The coaches that were there told my son to be back this afternoon at regular time, if they dont make a decision though it will be another wasted time/gas trip.. Norton is correct from what i heard though, Jones made a motion and NO ONE seconded it and it died.. I've hunted/fished with Shortt he coached myself and my brother and i would/will back him in whatever he say's or does..

Not all "funds" go through the school for accounting. Free cell phones, free vehicles, free homes, jobs with the city that they never go to, etc. wink

For what its worth, Cleburne County is nothing like them towns described.. Not saying some funny business isn't going on.. But it's not them places. As far as cash flow..

Sounds like Goober and Floyd are trying to take over things from Aunt B and Otis. Andy needs to step in a sort things out.

It all stems from Shortt telling the players last year that an opposing team would be calling them the "N" word and some would be called white trash, and for them to not pay any attention to it and just play the game. This was videoed and several people took an offense to it. He never called anyone that, just told them what was going to happen that night and tried to prepare them for it. Been around that guy for numerous years, I'm 41 and never heard him say the "N" word in any deroggative way at all!!

The place I was referring to is none of the ones mentioned but has been a top football team in the state for years.

Now, if what ya'll are saying is accurate, sounds as though this coach is preparing his players for a game as well as for life and how to respond in certain situations.
