I am thinking about getting a tree stand before hunting season this fall. I have never owned one before. I will mostly be squirrel hunting but am interested in getting into bow hunting for deer in the next year or two. Any advice on the best affordable tree stand, or ones to stay away from? I am thinking about getting a climbing stand as I don't own property to leave a stand on.

Folding saw: $15
$20 left over. You can jerry rig you a set of shooting sticks for less than that.

That looks like a good chair, but i do want something that I can get at least 10 or 15 feet up in trees with. I think i would do better later in the season off the ground. You realize your life will depend on the construction of said stand. I don't think I would be thinking "cheap" in this instance. Buy you a used Summit Viper off of Craigslist. I have three or four that I gave $100 for secondhand.

I agree with the above Aaron. Summit Viper steel climber will not set you back too much and its a rock solid climber. New ones will also come with a harness (please use one). I have taken a bunch of naps in a tree in that climber!
If you find a used climber let me know and I'll hook you up with a harness.

Tractor Supply had lock on style tree stands for $25 in February (clearance). Seemed tempting, but mentally couldn't handle the idea of the cheapest thing I could find separating 230 pounds from the force of gravity.
Take the advice above and get something used off of Craigslist. I would go with a new harness though.

Thanks for all of the info fellas. I definitely do plan to use a harness. I like to think i'm agile but in reality would probably end up standing up too fast and blacking out or something like that.

Your perceived agility or (lack of) should not be a factor in deciding to wear a harness. Gravity won't care how agile you are if something goes wrong 15' off the ground.
Also cost and weight of stands seem to be inversely proportional. I would try to scrape another $50-100 or so together and get a used aluminum stand instead of going cheap for a steel stand ... especially if you are going to be humping it in and out every hunt.

Get a aluminum summit viper. You can find them in your price range. IMHO when it comes to stands, cheap= uncomfortable and heavy. The viper is very comfortable, in aluminum is fairly light and easy to use and pack in and out. And Do wear a harness, it only takes one fall no matter how agile you are, hitting the ground from 10+ feet can kill you.

I would spend that $100 bucks on a good harness and then save up $200 for a good stand. Been there, done that, and wore the back brace. Agility is useless when falling backwards because you hit the ground about the time you realize you're falling.

I got a Baker tree stand somewhere. Haul that around and you'll pay somebody $100 to take it off your hands.

I got a 34 year old Amacker. First sit down/stand up climber that came out. Came with a safty belt that saved my life in 82'. Cost me $85. Weighs as much as a rail car but is safe
