I need your guys help. I want to get a 12 ga for turkey hunting and I want to know what you would get and why. I have several 20 ga shotguns but they only shoot 2 3/4 shells.

You are going to have to give your budget for anyone to effectively suggest a gun to you. They can range from $250 to $2500.

Remington 870 compact 20 gauge, trigger job, pistol grip stock, good set of rifle sights, Indian Creek choke, dip job, and should still have some money left over to buy enough TSS for a couple seasons worth of turkey mashing.

I went through about 5 guns trying to get one that would pattern most any load, shoot to point of aim and that would cycle every shell I put in it. After getting sick of buying chokes, shells, sights and failures to eject I wound up with an older mossberg 835. It is built like a tank and weighs almost as much but it will kill with any shell / choke combo you try and it won't fail to shoot true or let me down when the moment comes. I knew 4 years ago that gun was the one I should buy because I'd seen it in action with other hunters and they were all getting amazing numbers with many different shell / choke combinations. I was just hard headed and kept trying different guns instead of one I knew would get the job done. The reason it isn't finicky and throws such good patterns is due to it having a 10 gauge diameter bore at the receiver that necks down to 12 gauge further down the barrel. It let's the shot expand and then constrict again and the results are excellent. The only two things I will say is that you will want a Sims recoil pad, especially with the newer, lighter 835's and I wouldn't shoot winchester longbeards. The mossberg and longbeards both pattern so tightly by themselves that shooting that combination is like trying to hit a turkey with a golf ball at 30 yards. After I put the Sims on mine I don't even mind patterning it with 3 1/2 shells. Btw, I sold a Benelli SBE in favor of the Mossberg . I might could have made the SBE shoot but after 3 chokes and 4 she'll combos I was fed up. I had a newer 870 and wasn't real impressed with it but I know the older 870's were really good with the right combination. Jughead is right that you can get 12 gauge range with a 20 if you reload. Heck you can even make 50 yard guns out of a lot of 20's with the right choke and some Federal HW 7's.

Get an 870 in whatever gauge you prefer. Personally, I would leave it in the stock configuration.

I wouldn't recommend it if it's for someone that is most likely going to be shooting at a bunch of turkeys. I imagine you could prolly just tote a nerf gun and it ain't gonna make a whole hell of a lot of difference when all is said and done. grin

800 is a good budget To get just about any type of gun you want.

I would first decide on what type of gun you would like. Auto, pump, or single-shot, or O/U.

Pump, I would look at the 870 or the 835. I personally like the older versions myself. Just seem a little better made to me.

Autoloaders, benelli, browning/winchester, or the beretta.

I don't particularly care for single shot, but in a O/U I would look at the citoris or cynergys.

The Autoloaders or O/U will be probably the top of your budget, but can be had for around 800.

I'm a new turkey addict, my addiction started 3 seasons ago with borrowed mossburg 500, great gun and flipped my 1st bird with it at 10 steps. Before last season I bought a 870 turkey gun from bass pro shops and I've been really pleased with it. It's light enough to run up and down the hills of jackson county and at 21" barrel it's very maneuverable. The stock is synthetic and mossyoak but I'm gonna change to a pistol grip and cerakote the whole thing this summer. I've been please with it and at $450 out the door it was a good buy.

Finally deported myself from the peoples republik of Kaliforkistan.

Save some time and go to nitros website, buy whatever gun you want, find it on their list, use the choke/shell combo they recommend, and boom you have a stone cold killer. Only thing left is verify poa/poi, and hood sights can correct that.

I have a win. 1300 that shoots 3" mega weights - 250+ pellets @ 40 yards with the choke they recommended. I haven't done a thing to change it.

Id get a $300 Compact 20ga 870 and spend the rest on getting supplies for TSS. It shoots better than any 12ga shell.

I'd get a franchi affinity 20 gauge in bottomland camo. Then a $25-$30 Carlson's or Trulock choke. You could save up and buy some TSS or Fed Hwt 7's later on.

I toted an 835 for close to 20yrs, got the 20ga bug last yr and bought a Benelli M2 20ga. Started loading some TSS this year and killed 2 birds over 50yds. Those were with 2 3/4" shells too. Doubt I'll ever tote a 12ga again. You can do the same with any 20ga, I just had an itch to get the M2
